The decline and fall of the Palm empire
The once-mighty Palm, still successful on paper from the momentum of past glories, is doomed to decline and failure. It wasn’t always thus. Here’s my preemptive post-mortem.
About 12 years ago, I met with a man I didn’t know, working for a startup I was unfamiliar with to see a product I’d never heard of.
The man was Ed Colligan. The startup was Palm Computing (though it had recently been acquired by modem maker U.S. Robotics). And the product was code-named “Touchdown,” later to be branded the “Palm Pilot.”
At the time, I was executive editor of a computer magazine, and Palm was just one of a dozen or so companies scheduled that week. Most of those meetings were forgotten minutes after they concluded. But the “Touchdown” meeting was a revelation. Colligan, now president and CEO of Palm, left me a device to test...more
Sony Pictures making Metal Gear movie
At the Electronic Entertainment Expo last year, Konami revealed that work had begun on a live-action movie based on Metal Gear Solid. The news broke via a pamphlet for Studio Kojima, the Konami-owned development house headed up by Metal Gear series creator Hideo Kojima.
"I have received many offers to adapt Metal Gear Solid. It has taken a long time, but we have finally settled on an arrangement," Kojima said in a statement. "False facts aside, a movie project is underway. I have finalized a Class-A contract with a party in Hollywood."
For eight months, the identity of the aforementioned "party" was unknown. That changed this week, when Sony Pictures Entertainment vice chairman Yair Landau revealed his studio is developing the project.
"We're working with the Metal Gear guys," Landau told GameSpot following his D.I.C.E. summit keynote address in Las Vegas. "It's a very cinematic game, it really lends itself to movie telling. But the question is, 'How do you translate Snake's experience into a full arc that conforms to what audiences expect on the large screen?'"...more

HD DVD hacked!
Just as Slysoft’s AnyDVD software lets consumers easily watch copy-protected DVDs by remove region coding and going straight to playing the movie without waiting for FBI warning or other logos, AnyDVD HD gives consumers the same freedom with HD DVD movies at last.
With the defeat of HD DVD encryption making the recent news, it comes as no surprise to discover that SlySoft, makers of the CloneCD, CloneDVD and AnyDVD software programs, have released software to deal with the problems of HD DVD encryption.
It allows you to decrypt HD DVD movies, watch HDCP compliant movies on non-compliant HDCP monitors and graphics cards, and play back HD DVD movies through PowerDVD Ultra DVD viewing software for PCs.
For owners of an HD DVD drive for PCs and a collection of HD DVD movies, the possibility of making a backup to a hard drive now exists, restoring what should be a consumer’s right to making a backup in case the original is damaged....more
Cisco says 77 of its routers open to 'drive-by pharming'
Cisco Systems Inc. is warning users that nearly 80 of its routers are vulnerable to a hack tactic that got play last week.
Dubbed "drive-by pharming" by Symantec Corp. and university researchers who first publicized the danger in a paper, the attack involves luring users to malicious sites where a device's default password is used to redirect them to bogus sites. Once they are at those sites, their identities could be stolen or malware could be force-fed to their computers.
In an advisory posted Thursday, Cisco listed 77 vulnerable routers in the lines sold to small offices, home offices, branch offices and telecommuters. The advisory recommended that users change the default username and password required to access the router's configuration settings, and disable the device's HTTP server feature...more

Introduction: BookJetty.com

BAK2u likes to bring to you interesting and innovating ideas that we ourselves come across or from our customers. Today, lets take a look at this local (Singapore) website, BookJetty.com
From BookJetty:
"One of the best ways to learn and relax at the same time is through reading. The problem is there are too many books out there, which one to read? Not all authors can express themselves well enough, so finding a good book to read is important.
For the past few years, before each visit to the National Library, I (Mr. Herryanto Siatono.) would search Amazon.com to filter out some good books based on the sales rank, customer reviews and the editorial reviews. Then I would visit NLB online catalogue to check if they were available in the library. That was a very time consuming task.
Last month (January 2006), I decided to do something about it, after all, the repetition is a pattern, and you can always automate a pattern....more"

Zune Phone confirmed!
We don’t wanna say we told you so, but, ya know, we did. On Monday, Microsoft filed a mystery application with the FCC for an enigmatic wireless device that could be used to talk over the Internet. Sounds like a VoiP device, right?
Not really. The device is described as being used for “consumer broadband access and networking,” which doesn’t sound like vanilla VoIP to me. Microsoft goes on to say that the device would use OFDM as its communications protocol, not WiFi or Bluetooth. Well, why not? The standard OFDM (orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing) is a modulation scheme that is used widely in upcoming 4G standards of the future. But with wireless access gaining momentum, and the all-around arms race for bandwidth, 4G starts to make sense, in a crazy, crazy kind of way.
The idea of a next-gen, high-bandwidth capable phone sounded to these ears like the Zune Phone, so we did some poking, called some sources, and waded into the wonderful world of Zune. One thing led to another, and we’ve determined that there is a whole lot more going on at Bear Creek in Redmond than we figured....more

PhonneBAK Mobilephone program: Supported Phones
A first look at Windows Mobile 6
Microsoft Corp.'s recently announced Windows Mobile 6 software for smart phones is a step forward for the company, offering some important improvements over previous versions of the software. But just how good is the new software?
On Thursday, Microsoft offered me the chance to play with Windows Mobile 6 ahead of the 3GSM show in Barcelona, Spain, next week. The short demonstration, which took place at Microsoft's office in Singapore, was done using a currently available handset: the High Tech Computer Corp. (HTC) S620 smart phone.
The S620, also known by its code name Excalibur, sports a small QWERTY keypad, a 2.4-in. QVGA (320 pixels by 240 pixels) screen, and support for GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication), GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) and EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) networks. Powered by Texas Instruments Inc.'s 200-MHz OMAP 850 processor, the smart phone has 128MB of ROM and 64MB of DDR (double data rate) DRAM.
But enough about the handset used for the demonstration. What about the software?...more

Windows Mobile 6 Taps New Exchange Features
Microsoft's new Windows Mobile OS promises to take advantage of Exchange Server 2007 features that will provide a richer e-mail experience.
Microsoft Corp. will unwrap a new version of its Windows Mobile OS at the 3GSM conference in Barcelona next week that promises to take advantage of features in Exchange Server 2007 that provide a richer e-mail experience on devices.
The new OS, which was formerly code-named Crossbow, will give users of devices supporting the OS a visual experience for e-mail that is similar to the one they have on PCs, said John Starkweather, a group product manager at Microsoft.
Some of the new features Microsoft added to Exchange Server 2007, which was released in December, will provide this new user experience, he said. For example, Microsoft allows users to search through a greater number of e-mail messages on devices and also will allow a remote user, even without administrator privileges, to wipe all Exchange Server-fed data from a device if it is lost or stolen. Windows Mobile 6 is the first mobile OS that will enable devices to take advantage of these features, Starkweather said...more
Nokia to roll out free mobile map service
The world's top cellphone maker Nokia will open a new service on February 10 offering free maps and routing in more than 150 countries, the Finnish company said on Thursday.
Nokia's "smart2go" will let users put localised search and route-finding services into mobile phones for free.
It will also allow them to use its car navigation software -- from last year's acquisition of Gate5 -- at a considerably lower price than dedicated GPS devices.
Standalone route-finder makers such as market leader TomTom have said they do not see mobile phones as an immediate threat to their business, and may even create an opportunity to sell route-finding software to cellphone users.

Study says video games are good for eyes
Video game addicts, rejoice: U.S. researchers have found that playing is actually good for your eyes, and despite all those dire warnings from your parents, it won't make you blind.
A study by the University of Rochester showed that people who played action video games for a few hours a day over the course of a month improved their vision by about 20 percent.
"Action video game play changes the way our brains process visual information," Daphne Bavelier, professor of brain and cognitive sciences, said in the study published on the university's Web site, www.rochester.edu, on Tuesday.
"These games push the human visual system to the limits and the brain adapts to it. That learning carries over into other activities and possibly everyday life."
Bavelier and a graduate student tested college students who had played very few, if any, video games in the last year.
Test subjects were given an eye test similar to the one used at regular eye clinics and then divided into two groups -- one played shoot-em-up action games for an hour a day while the control group played a less visually complex game.
Their vision was tested after the study, with those who played the action game scoring better in the eye test.
The researchers said their findings could help patients with several types of visual defects.

Romania President: Thanks for letting us pirate
According to Romania's president, Traian Băsescu, piracy rocks -- and he recently thanked Bill Gates for it during a recent conference.
Gates was in the country celebrating Microsoft's new global technical support centre in the nation's capital, Bucharest.
Curiously, thanks in a large part to rampant piracy, employees at the new facility are familiarised with the software giant's wares.
Romania couldn't be more proud of this fact.
"Piracy helped the young generation discover computers. It set off the development of the IT industry in Romania," flaunted the Romanian president...more
