Coming soon: X-rated online games

The adult entertainment industry is on the verge of making online gaming sexier at a time when mainstream publishers are fighting a political and cultural war over erotic content, a Reuters report said.

The controversial topic would be the subject of a conference in San Francisco, where many of the growing industry's big names would gather, the report said.

Reuters quoted a certain “Jezebel,” a telephone sex business owner and operator of the virtual Bareback Bordello in RedLightCenter.com, as saying that “this is the newest industry and the oldest industry in the world coming together.”

Like popular games such as “World of Warcraft” and “Second Life,” Utherverse's RedLightCenter was an online universe that could support thousands of players, the report said.

The report said that unlike mainstream games, where virtual sex happened in areas apart from the main thrust of play, RedLightCenter started with sex.

The majority of video game sales in the country came from console and handheld game sales, the report said.

Hardware makers Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo had long declined to license development software to game makers whose titles included sexual content, according to the report.

Still, sex had been the hot-button issue for the $12.6-billion video game industry since its ratings board last summer slapped an “Adults Only 18+” label on Take-Two Interactive Software's best-selling “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas” game, the report further said.

No force feed for China Mobile Standard

Beijing appears to be favoring a homegrown next-generation mobile phone standard for its market, but should let carriers make their own choice, a US trade official, quoted by an Associated Press report, said.

The Associated Press report said the appeal by Franklin Lavin, undersecretary of commerce for international trade, came amid reports China is pressing carriers to adopt its standard to boost its technology industries.

"We do see signs that China intends to tilt the playing field to a national standard, even if customers favor an international system," Lavin was quoted as saying. China is the world's biggest mobile phone market with 461 million phones, and decisions about standards could have far-reaching effects on the equipment market, the report said.

The report said China is promoting 3G standard to reduce reliance on foreign technology and create opportunities for Chinese telecoms companies.

US trade officials said last year that China had promised to let carriers make their own choice.

Chinese carriers are reluctant to use the Chinese system, TD-SCDMA, saying it doesn't work as well as foreign systems known as W-CDMA and cdma2000, according to Chinese news reports.

But industry experts say Beijing is still pressing carriers to use its standard alongside the international rivals, the report said.

Popuri shows lots of stats for your site

From http://techchee.com

Popuri is making use of the web 2.0 concept. Which all the stats data are borrowed from other stats service providers. Furthermore, it uses the Ajax technology, which makes querying the stats bring no page refresh. What I like is it’s got the little Firefox spinner spinning Firefox spinner! when the stats data is being loaded. Similar to the idea that I use for building my little “tell-a-friend” page. Unfortunately, Popuri is currently having problems to provide certain stats, such as Technorati inbound links and del.icio.us bookmarks. This is due to the inmence immense amount of requests and got banned by some stats service providers, after TechCrunch made the buzz.

Intel Plans $2.5B Chip Factory in China

Intel Corp. announced Monday it will build a $2.5 billion chip factory in China, giving the U.S. company a bigger presence in the booming Chinese market and boosting Beijing's efforts to attract high-tech investment.

The factory will supply chipsets to customers in China, which Intel expects to be the largest information technology market by the time the facility opens in 2010, Intel CEO Paul Otellini said.

Chipsets are computer chips that connect a microprocessor to other system components.

Reflecting China's growing importance as a high-tech market, the facility in the northeastern city of Dalian will be Intel's first factory in Asia to fabricate wafers, the thin silicon platters on which dozens of chips are etched. It will boost the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company's investments in China to $4 billion.

PS3 PAL launch - a flop or not?

There has been a lot of talk about the Sony Playstation 3 launch. Much of the focus has been on the especially embarrassing Australian launch, where reportedly the press outnumbered the fans. But really, should Sony be concerned?

Do we have midnight launches for new Blu-ray disc players? Is there supposed to be a party with radio personalities when a new media center hits the market? No, then why did we expect much more from the Sony launch of their new entertainment hub?

Many web sites, including the respected game bloggers at Kotaku, gave tongue in cheek reports of the Friday midnight PAL launch of the PS3, the lack of people turning up to the flagship launch was indeed embarrassing for Sony, this was to be the hype starter for a media bombardment foisting new technology into the hearts and wallets of a new gaming generation.

In the UK the PS3 launch was met with trepidation amongst authorities, with police banning the midnight openings at some retailers, and Sony giving away 46" HD TVs in oxford street to surprisingly sparse crowds...more

Palm reports 61% drop in earnings!

Palm reported a 61% drop in its third-quarter profits as speculation of a buyout continued to swirl, an Associated Press report said.

The Associated Press report said sales of the company's Treo smart phones reached record levels, but increased costs, $5.7 million in stock-based compensation, and $3.7 million in acquisition-related charges hurt Palm's bottom line.

The report said for the three months ended March 2, the company earned $11.8 million on revenue of $410.5 million. In the year-ago period, Palm earned $29.9 million on sales of $388.5 million.

Excluding stock-based compensation and other one-time items, Palm said it would have earned $16.5 million, compared with $19.8 million, in the year-ago period, the report said.

The report said Palm, whose profits quintupled to $336 million in fiscal 2006, saw its income and revenue take a sharp drop last fall as it faced some execution problems and an onslaught of new competition from deep-pocketed rivals.

But Treo sales jumped 23% to a record high of $354 million in the fiscal third quarter, the company said.

The report further said rumors of a potential Palm sale rose in recent months as its competition stiffened and news of the company hiring Morgan Stanley to explore its strategic options surfaced.

BenQ chief resigns over difficulties in Germany

The chairman of BenQ offered his resignation on over losses caused by the company's inability to make its former German mobile phone subsidiary profitable, an InfoWorld Daily report said.

The report said BenQ's board of directors refused to accept the offer, however, demanding that he remain in his role and turn the company around.

K.Y. Lee offered to resign over losses suffered after the Taiwanese company's acquisition, then disposal, of the mobile phone arm of Siemens, which operated for about a year under the name BenQ Mobile.

BenQ Mobile filed for bankruptcy last September after BenQ announced it would stop investing in it, then a few weeks ago the German administrator dealing with the case said the company would be split up and sold after attempts to find a buyer failed, the report said...more

Sales of Palm?

Speculation of a buyout of Palm heightened after an industry online publication reported a deal could occur this week.

The maker of Treo smart phones and handheld computers hired investment banker Morgan Stanley a few weeks ago to explore its strategic options, including a possible sale, according to a person familiar with the situation.

Now, according to Unstrung.com, Morgan Stanley wants to close a deal by the time Palm releases its fiscal third-quarter results this week.

Citing unnamed sources, the business news Web site focusing on the wireless communications industry said the potential buyers included cell phone makers Nokia and Motorola, and private equity firms Texas Pacific Group and Silver Lake Partners.

Representatives of Morgan Stanley, Motorola, Texas Pacific Group and Silver Lake Partners all declined to comment on the report. Nokia did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

Marlene Somsak, a spokeswoman for Palm, also would not comment on the report except to reiterate that the company "is focused on growing its business."..more

1 million pirated discs raided by sniffer dogs

From Jonathan, Australia

Lucky find in Malaysia: one million pirated discs

A whiff of plastic led sniffer dogs in Malaysia to a cache of about one million pirated game and movie discs with a street value of roughly $3 million, film industry officials said on Tuesday.

The fake DVDs were hidden along with replicating machines and other tools on four floors of an office building in the southern city of Johor Baru, neighboring Singapore.

The find was the first major success for Lucky and Flo, two female black Labradors deployed last week as part of Malaysia's

battle on illegal recordings of music and movies, said Neil Gane, an official of the Motion Picture Association.

"Lucky and Flo were able to sniff under the doors -- all the doors were locked, and many of them had metal grilles," Gane told Reuters.

"If they smelt polycarbonate, they would sit down. Then the officials used metal grinders and bolt cutters to open the doors."

Malaysia, which figures on a U.S. watch list on piracy, has dramatically stepped up efforts to rein in copyright pirates as it negotiates a free-trade pact with the United States.

The dogs are being given a month's trial by Malaysian officials in a joint effort with the Motion Picture Association, which groups six major Hollywood film companies.

First checks of computers found in the raid appeared to show they were used to host a Web site selling illegal recordings to customers in Singapore and other countries.

At least six people were detained in the raid, Gane said...more

Nokia hurls new patent suit against Qualcomm

Nokia has filed complaints against wireless technology company Qualcomm Inc. in Germany and the Netherlands, an Associated Press report said.

The Associated Press report said Nokia is requesting declarations that Qualcomm's European patents are exhausted concerning products sold in the European Union with a Qualcomm license.

If Nokia's claim succeeds, Qualcomm would be prevented in Europe from enforcing its patents in relation to Nokia handsets incorporating Texas Instruments chipsets, the report said.

Qualcomm makes money from selling chips and by collecting licensing fees from Nokia and other wireless equipment manufacturers. It is embroiled in several legal and trade disputes with Nokia, and their current licensing agreement expires April 9, the report said.

The complaints were filed in the Regional Court of Mannheim, Germany, and in the Hague District Court, the Netherlands, the report said...more

Google adopts tighter privacy rules on search services

Google is adopting new privacy measures to make it more difficult to connect online search requests with the people making them, a thorny issue that provoked a showdown with the US government last year, an Associated Press report said.

The Associated Press report said under the new revisions, Google promised to wrap a cloak of anonymity around the vast amounts of information that the firm regularly collects about its millions of users around the world.

Google believes it can provide more assurances of privacy by removing key pieces of identifying information from its system every 18 to 24 months, the report said...more

Viacom sues YouTube for US$1 Billion

SpongeBob has YouTube soaked in hot water.

A little more than a month after Viacom demanded that YouTube remove all content obtained from Viacom-owned cable networks such as Nickelodeon and Comedy Central, the media conglomerate sued the site and parent company Google Tuesday for more than $1 billion, claiming they are guilty of "massive intentional copyright infringement of Viacom's entertainment properties."

The lawsuit also seeks an injunction barring Google and YouTube from any further copyright violations, claiming that almost 160,000 clips have already been illegally posted on YouTube, where they've been viewed more than 1.5 billion times.

According to a 27-page complaint filed in a Manhattan federal court, YouTube failed to take "reasonable precautions" to block the rampant posting of copyrighted material and instead deliberately amassed clips from popular series such as The Daily Show and SpongeBob SquarePants to draw traffic to the site...more

Sony unveils virtual PlayStation world

Sony pulled another rabbit out of its hat when it revealed a new freebie for PlayStation 3 owners - an online, 3D virtual world in which gamers can hang out and communicate with each other.

The announcement almost created a public relations disaster for the games console market leader, which went to enormous lengths last week to keep it under wraps.

Demonstrating the service - dubbed PlayStation Home - at the Game Developer's Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, Sony worldwide studios president Phil Harrison said he expected the free download for the PS3 to be available from August.

The virtual world, which is uncannily similar to Second Life, will help take the sting out of the PS3's $1200 price and delayed March 23 release date...more

Windows Mobile devices - Daylight Saving Time 2007 Download

With the new energy laws going into effect this year, Daylight Savings Time (DST) is now starting earlier and ending later. That means DST now starts on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. Previously it began on the first Sunday in April and ended on the last Sunday in October.

The problem is that after the DST dates change on this Sunday, March 11, 2007, Windows Mobile devices can't update their clocks for the affected time zones correctly without a software update.

What's more, your Windows Mobile device might not display correct time zone information for certain time periods during the year, and that may cause you to sync incorrect data to your Mac. You could be one hour early or late for your appointments. Anyone doing business in North America should apply a patch to make sure your Pocket PC will make the switch on the correct date.

Got Lost? Take a photo of building and Microsoft directs you.

Microsoft Research TechFest is the world's largest software maker's chance to show off the talent of its 750 global researchers, who are working on problems ranging from how to use sensors in medical science to how to view high-definition pictures through a Web browser.

The technologies and products on display are at various stages of development. Some are ready to be incorporated into existing products, while others are years away from finding the right application to utilize the technology.

The map-search technology required Microsoft to get millions of street-level pictures of Seattle's buildings and landmarks. Those pictures were added to a database and indexed by distinguishing features that can be cross referenced to pictures sent in by users.

Increasingly sophisticated mobile phones are becoming a popular device to search for maps, directions and other local information and Microsoft said the service is a logical next step.

"When you are using a mobile phone, then inputting text can sometimes be difficult. So we decided to make the camera the input," said Xing Xie, a Microsoft researcher who was demonstrating the technology.

The service is still being tested at Microsoft and releasing the product on a wide scale could prove challenging since the company would need databases full of pictures of buildings in every city.

Other interesting demonstrations included a new Web security application that prevents automated computers from exploiting Internet sites with a quiz to distinguish whether the animal in a picture is a cat or a dog.

It would replace current verification systems that require users to look at an image of garbled text and type out a word or a series of numbers and letter.

Microsoft researcher John Doucher said it is easy for humans to decipher a cat from a dog, but computers running image-reading software often have trouble. This application is ready for use and available for Web developers at asirra.com.

Microsoft also showed off a new type of answering machine. Instead of a conventional machine that displays the number of messages, Microsoft's "Bubble board" displays the messages in floating bubbles on a touch-screen monitor with the caller's picture inside.

Unlike current answering machines that play messages in chronological order, the Bubble board allows the user to choose whose message to hear first by touching the caller's message bubble.

Movie Firms Working on Digital Film System

Tired of being turned away at the theater box office when a movie's sold out? Unhappy there's no art-house theater in your neighborhood to cater to your hoity-toity theatrical tastes?

Those days could be ending, say representatives of Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. Entertainment and a company called Digital Cinema Implementation Partners.

The three are working on a new digital film delivery system that, if successful, could give theater operators the flexibility to put a popular movie on an extra screen as quickly as the demand for it arises. At the same time, theater operators could boot out a surprise stinker and even book in for a day or two an art-house film with a small but devoted audience.

"Our goal really is to have the easiest, fastest, most reliable, most cost-effective content delivery technique possible to the theaters we represent," said Travis Reid, Chief Executive of Digital Cinema Implementation Partners, which is working with Warner Bros. and Universal.

The process, still in the early stages of development, would use satellite and broadband delivery systems to beam digital films directly to theaters, rather than have them copied onto hard drives and delivered by hand, as for the most part they are now, said Darcy Antonellis, Warner Bros.' executive vice president for distribution and technology.

That kind of rapid delivery, Reid said, would allow theater operators the flexibility to economically market niche films that could be shown for just a day or two to a targeted audience. It would also allow operators to quickly find more screens for surprise hits.

"We believe that if we can make that a very efficient process, very fast, they'll be able to respond to audience demands more," he said.

Beaming an encrypted version of a digital film directly to the theater should also cut down on film piracy and bootlegging, Antonellis said, by eliminating the number of opportunities for people to get their hands on the movie as it is transit.

DCIP is owned equally by the Regal, AMC and Cinemark theater chains, which have 14,000 screens in North America. The new system would be available to those and other interested theater operators, Reid and Antonellis said. About 2,200 U.S. theater screens currently show digital films.

Officials with the venture wouldn't offer a date by which they hope to have the system in place or give a cost estimate.

"I think the latter part of this year we'll likely be doing some testing," said Antonellis. "Our hope is as things progress and ... as the projectors roll out there will be a lot more activity."

LG Tops World CDMA Phone Sales for Two Straight Years

LG Electronics announced that it ranked atop the CDMA phone sales in 2006 again following in 2005, quoting the world mobile phone market report 2006 recently released by Strategy Analytics, a market research firm.

The paper said that LG sold 38.5 million units of CDMA mobile phones in 2006, accounting for 22.3% of market share. Up next was Motorola which posted 31.2 million units or 18.1% of market share and Samsung came in third place with 25.6 million units of sales or 14.9% of market share. Nokia followed Samsung with annual sales of 18 million units or 10.4% of market share.

LG also ranked first in annual CDMA phone sales in 2003 when it sold 21.3 million units, taking up 21.6% of market share, and in 2005 when the sales reached 30.4 million units. LG attributed the good results to the success of Chocolate phone and EnV phone in the U.S. market.

In addition, LG said that a result of NPD Group, a market researcher, showed that four out of ten best-selling mobile phones in the U.S. were made by LG. Three were from Nokia and two were from Motorola, said the mobile phone maker.
