MySpace China

According to China Stock Blog, MySpace appears close to going global. Says the blog...

Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Chris DeWolfe, speaking at an Internet conference in San Francisco on Wednesday, said its big plan for the year is to expand in Europe, Australia and elsewhere.

“We need to prove ourselves internationally,” DeWolfe said before investors at the Thomas Weisel Partners Internet & Telecom Conference. MySpace, based in Santa Monica, has already taken off in the United Kingdom, he continued, and it is “taking a hard look at China.”

As a general rule, a company just dipping its toes into the Web globalization waters is wise to start off a bit more slowly, perhaps with a Spanish-language Web site. Spanish doesn't pose the character set challenges of a language such as Chinese, which makes for a less-steep learning curve. But the lure of China is great and time is a wasting for a company wanting to grow BIG fast.

Taiwan's BenQ reports 6th straight quarterly loss

Taiwan's BenQ reported its sixth straight quarterly loss on a further decline in handset sales and increased interest payments, an Associated Press report said.

The Associated Press report said the firm would spin off its branded operations to focus on contract manufacturing.

The company reported a net loss of NT$ 1.76 billion ($53.3 million) for the three months ended March 31, down from a net loss of NT$5 billion ($150 million) in the year-earlier period.

The report said BenQ's string of quarterly net losses followed its takeover of Siemens' handset-making division in late 2005.

The company had difficulty integrating the loss-making unit, eventually liquidating it, which reduced its handset output.

In a restructuring, BenQ said it will spin off its BenQ-branded operations in September, when it will rename itself Jia Da and focus on contract manufacturing, the report further said.

Earth 2?

European astronomers have discovered what they believe to be the first potentially habitable planet outside our solar system. The researchers say the planet could contain water, which is needed to support life as we know it. VOA's Jessica Berman reports.

Gliese 581 C, as astrophysicists have named it, is about five times heavier than Earth. The newly discovered planet orbits a, very small red dwarf or star, Gliese 581, in the constellation Libra about 20.5 light years away.

Geneva University's Michel Mayor, along with Portuguese and French colleagues, discovered Gliese 581 C using the European Southern Observatory's telescope in Chile.

By watching the planet's gravitational impact on the red dwarf, the scientists concluded the temperature of the planet is a habitable 0 to 40 degrees Celsius.

If true, astrophysicists say in all likelihood there's water on Gliese 581 C, but they say more solar observations are needed.

While there's no way to actually tell whether there's water on the planet, Mayor says evidence of water has been found in less hospitable space environments, such as Mars and Jupiter.

"So, water is not so much exceptional," said Mr. Mayor. "But what is more specific is you have a planet with a good temperature. So, you have the possibility to have liquid water on such a planet."

Scientists have identified about 220 planets outside the solar system. But observers say Gliese 581 C may be the most attractive candidate for space exploration, because of its relative short distance from Earth and the possibility of water on its surface.

BlackBerry opens e-mail service to other handsets

Research In Motion opens BlackBerry mobile e-mail service to rival devices ahead of iPhone assault

Research In Motion (RIM) plans to expand its BlackBerry mobile e-mail service beyond its current eight million subscribers by opening it up to rival devices.

The move, designed in part to establish BlackBerry as a consumer service, and not just a gadget for corporate customers, comes as mobile services fast emerge as the next battleground for internet groups.

Apple's iPhone, for instance, will offer a free "push" e-mail service from Yahoo!. At the device's launch in January, Jerry Yang, the Yahoo! co-founder said: "It's basically like having a BlackBerry."

In an effort to guard its lead in the mobile e-mail market, Canada-based RIM has developed a piece of “virtual” software that allows smartphones that run on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6.0, a specialised operating system, to join the BlackBerry network...more

The dark side of internet: Videos of Virginia Tech killer

Even as television news anchors explained why they would no longer show the videos made by suspected Virginia Tech killer Seung Hui Cho, his diatribe was rapidly being uploaded to YouTube.com.

There hundreds of versions of Cho's video and news coverage of it can be found. On Friday, the three most watched YouTube videos featured Cho.

Most news outlets stopped showing the videos by Thursday, in part due to public pressure and concerns that the images could incite copycats.

But they have been granted new life on the Internet, where younger viewers have flocked in recent years to catch home-made videos and other clips. Now they can see into the eyes of a young man many have called a monster.

"Those seeking the video online must know in their own heart why they need to watch it again," said Andrew Finlayson, news director for Chicago's Fox 32, which stopped airing the video on Thursday. "I personally hope it is not for amusement but instead to reflect on how we can prevent this from happening again."

700,000 hits for video

One video posted Thursday on YouTube has been viewed more than 700,000 times. Furthermore, that video and the hundreds like it are being linked to blogs, MySpace profile pages and e-mailed across the Web. Hence, millions of people could still be watching Cho's disturbing actions even as mainstream media have stopped showing them.

Many of those viewers would likely be college-age, since in the four-week period ending April 14, 29.7 percent of YouTube's viewers were ages 18 to 24, according to Internet tracking firm Hitwise.

By contrast, last year, the median age of the viewers for the nightly news broadcasts of the three major networks was about 60, according to Nielsen ratings.

YouTube is not a media outlet but it does have a responsibility, said Bob Steele, the values scholar for the Poynter Institute, a journalism think tank in St. Petersburg, Fla.

"I'm not suggesting they should not allow the video [on YouTube], but they should consider the ramifications of the video being on there," he said. "Letting the chips fall where they may is not the answer. They should have some standards."

YouTube states policy

In a statement Friday, YouTube said there has "been an outpouring of emotional support by the YouTube community" in the wake of the killings. "We recognize that some individuals may use this same platform for messages and videos that are both insensitive and poor in taste. Any video that violates our terms of use will be removed immediately."

YouTube viewers must flag a video as inappropriate before site operators take action. YouTube's community guidelines also say videos depicting graphic or gratuitous violence are not allowed. "YouTube is not a shock site," according to the guidelines.

YouTube, owned by Google Inc., did not make an executive available for interview.

Media giant Viacom Inc. sued Google for $1 billion in March for copyright violations. Part of Viacom's frustration, cited in the federal lawsuit, is that YouTube must be asked to remove content from its site.

Videos of Cho are also available on other sites. Revver.com said none are posted on its site. Before videos go up on Revver, they are reviewed for copyright violations, a spokeswoman said Friday. If the poster owns the copyright, they could go up as long as the site's reviewers deemed them appropriate.

"If it's not their content, we won't post it," she said.

The top YouTube video on Friday was a copy of a report that first aired on NBC News.

Yet many of the Cho videos are what's called "mash-ups," in which the person adds music or other tricks....more

The Latest BlackBerry Blackout

It took Brooks Cappella about a nanosecond to notice that his BlackBerry wasn't working. He manages the technology operations at a New York hedge fund, Highland Financial, and he was wrestling with some problems on the company's servers when he stopped getting messages late on Apr. 17. Just what he needed to make a difficult day worse. "Any downtime is something we notice right away," he says. "Not having the BlackBerry didn't help."

Gulp. Surprise turned to disbelief as millions of hyperconnected professionals found themselves in the midst of a BlackBerry blackout that lasted from late in the day of Apr. 17 until the early hours of Apr. 18. As the network for the addictive e-mail device crashed, there were pangs of stomach-churning panic in some cases, simple loneliness in others. Research in Motion (RIMM), the Canadian company behind the BlackBerry, says the e-mail service was down for a little less than 12 hours...more

Motorola drops lawsuit against Indian carrier

Handset maker Motorola will drop a court case charging India’s state-run BSNL with unfairly disqualifying it from bidding on a large contract, an Associated Press report said.

The report said in November, the Delhi High Court temporarily stopped India's BSNL from awarding an estimated $5 billion contract to lay phone lines and supply advanced telephone equipment, after the US telecom equipment maker filed a complaint.

Motorola was disqualified from the bidding process on technical grounds, while Sweden-based Ericsson emerged as a favorite, the Associated Press report said.

"Withdrawal of the case by Motorola in no way reflects any change in Motorola's original position that its bid was in compliance with the tender conditions," the company said in a statement...more

[Samsung i600] Windows Mobile 6 Upgrade

It was announced in late May that Samsung will upgrade Blackjacks/i600 to WM6 free of charge. The update will be realeased for testing on May 26 with a 8 week testing period after which it will be available for current users to download.

Important features that will be available in WM6 include Voice Command (built in), Windows Mobile Update, Microsoft Office Mobile (View and edit documents, but not create them. Workaround is to create a blank document on computer and send to phone, than just edit that.), and Windows Live. UI will also be updated.

Diffrences between the Professional version and Standard version.

The Blackjack is going to recieve Windows Mobile 6 Standard instead of Windows Mobile 6 Professional due to “hardware restrictions”. The diffrences between Windows Mobile Standard and Professional are as follows:

  • Professional version allows Mobile Office to view, edit, and create new documents,. The Standard version only allows to view and edit. Workaround would be to create a blank document on computer and send it to the phone, than just edit that.
  • Remote Desktop Mobile is included on WM6 Professional. It will not be available on the Standard version.
  • Word count and spell check, in addition to the ability to copy, cut, and paste text will be available on the Professional version only. These functions will be not be available on the Standard version.
  • The ability to create, edit, and delete charts from the document will be available on the Professional version, while the Standard version will not include these features.

Leopard delayed by Apple iPhone

The next release of Apple's operating system, OS X, is being delayed by four months.

Scheduled to appear in mid-June, the new version of the Mac software, codenamed Leopard before now, will instead be released in October.

A trial, or beta, version, of Leopard will be available in June at the Apple developer conference.

The delay has been caused by the demands of the Apple iPhone which is intended to go on sale in June.

To ensure the iPhone hits its target, Apple has assigned some OS X engineers and quality testers to that project.

In a statement, Apple said the sophisticated software on the iPhone had forced it to make some difficult choices about where to concentrate its development and engineering efforts...more

Britain’s National Grid sells telecom unit for $4.9b

British utility National Grid said it agreed to sell its British telecom-equipment business to an Australian company for $4.9 billion.

The multinational power-network company, which also operates utilities in the US Northeast, said it would sell its National Grid Wireless UK business to Arqiva, an infrastructure company majority owned by Macquarie Communications Infrastructure Group, an externally managed investment vehicle of Australia's Macquarie Bank.

The acquisition will close immediately, the companies said.

The London utility will use $3.6 billion of the proceeds to buy back shares and focus on the British and US electric and gas markets, it said.

EMI to Sell Music Without Anticopying Software

EMI to Sell Music Without Anticopying Software Online-Strategy Shift Breaks With Industry On Combating Piracy In a major break with the music industry's longstanding antipiracy strategy, EMI Group PLC is set to announce today that it plans to sell significant amounts of its catalog without anticopying software, according to people familiar with the matter.

The London music company is to make its announcement at a London news conference featuring Apple Inc. Chief Executive Steve Jobs.

EMI is to sell songs without the software -- known as digital rights management -- through Apple's iTunes Store and possibly through other online outlets.
DRM has been a contentious issue in online music sales. Record companies have insisted that digital retailers employ the software to prevent rampant copying.

But because the DRM used by Apple is proprietary and doesn't work with services or devices made by competitors, it has had the additional consequence of locking owners of its popular iPod music players into buying the most popular mainstream music from the iTunes store, and not from its competitors.
Record companies have blamed this lock-in for limiting digital-music sales, which account for around 15% of all recorded-music sales in the U.S. EMI's move comes after months of private discussions and public advocacy by Internet and technology-industry executives, including Mr. Jobs, aimed at encouraging the music industry to change its approach to licensing music for sale online.

In February, Mr. Jobs took the unusual step of posting an 1,800-word essay on Apple's Web site urging major recording companies to consider dropping their insistence that music be sold over the Internet with DRM software.
Mr. Jobs contended that DRM software has been ineffective at solving digital piracy of music.

That is in large part, he argued, because the vast majority of music is sold today on CDs, which generally don't contain copy protection, making them easily sharable over the Internet through file-sharing technologies. Although Mr. Jobs wasn't the first to suggest such a change for the music industry, his essay spurred a vigorous debate throughout the technology and entertainment industries.

Also fueling the discussion recently has been a steepening drop in CD sales, which has forced the music industry to try to accelerate its digital future.

Privately, most labels rejected the idea out of hand, but EMI, the world's third-largest music company by sales after Universal Music Group and Sony BMG Music Entertainment, already was quietly exploring dropping DRM. EMI has struggled to overcome poor results and a laggard digital strategy, potentially contributing to its willingness to take a bold stance on DRM...
