Unlocked French iphones on sale for $1106

France Telecom set the price for an unlocked iPhone Wednesday at $1,106 -- squarely in the middle of the range its CEO spelled out on Tuesday -- as it started selling the iconic Apple Inc. smart phone throughout France.

The company's Orange mobile subsidiary, Apple's exclusive provider partner in France, is selling iPhones able to connect to other carriers for $1,106 when customers decline to sign a 12- or 24-month service contract.

Today, France Telecom CEO Didier Lombard had promised Orange would sell unlocked iPhones at "significantly lower" prices than the roughly $1,471 that rival T-Mobile charges its customers in Germany. The official price tag is right in the middle of the range Lombard quoted yesterday.

Orange priced the iPhone at $589 when purchased with a service plan, dubbed tariffs in Europe. Orange offers plans ranging in price from about $72 to $176, which include between 120 and 480 minutes. For an additional $148, Orange will unlock any locked iPhone, including those previously purchased with a 12- or 24-month contract...more

Google Service Uses Cell Towers to Locate Users

Google Maps With My Location, a service for mobile users that doesn't rely on GPS, is now in use by Google.

Google launched a location service for mobile users on Wednesday that doesn't rely on GPS.

Google Maps with My Location, currently in beta, locates users who don't have GPS-enabled phones based on their location to nearby cell towers. The result isn't as accurate as GPS (Global Positioning System) but works for people who lack the positioning technology in their phones.

"It helps users speed up search by showing the general neighborhood they're in," said Steve Lee, product manager at Google for the service. Without the location service, users must type in their address or neighborhood in order to find nearby businesses using Google Maps...more

An E-Book Reader That Just May Catch On

You’ve got to have a lot of nerve to introduce an electronic book reader in 2007.

Sure, the idea has appeal: an e-reader lets you carry hundreds of books, search or jump to any spot in the text and bump up the type size when your eyes get tired.

But the counterarguments are equally persuasive. Printed books are dirt cheap, never run out of power and survive drops, spills and being run over. And their file format will still be readable 200 years from now.

So e-book readers keep on coming and keep on flopping: the Rocket eBook Reader. Gemstar. Everybook. SoftBook. Librius Millennium Reader. The Sony Reader is in stores even now, priced at $350 and making literally dozens of sales.

Then on Monday, Amazon introduced its own e-book reader, called the Kindle. It arrives at $400 — reading material sold separately.

Are they completely nuts?...more

Personally, I still prefer to have a physical book on hand to read but if on the road the iPhone or PDA phone is good enough to tide me over. Paddy

Data Leak in Britain Affects 25 Million

The British government struggled Wednesday to explain its loss of computer disks containing detailed personal information on 25 million Britons, including an unknown number of bank account identifiers, in what analysts described as potentially the most significant privacy breach of the digital era.

It has defended its decision not to disclose the loss until Tuesday, 10 days after it had been informed, saying banks had asked for time to put heightened security measures in place first.

The data went astray in October, after two computer disks that contained information on families that receive government financial benefits for children were sent out from a government tax agency unregistered, via a private delivery service. The episode is one of three this year in which the agency improperly handled its vast archive of personal data, according to an account by the chancellor of the Exchequer — including the sending of a second set of disks when the first set did not arrive.

In sheer numbers, the breach was smaller than several in the United States over the last few years. Last year, a computer and detachable hard drive with the names, birth dates and Social Security numbers of 26.5 million veterans and military personnel was stolen from the home of an analyst, but recovered apparently without any harm. In 2003, a former software engineer at America Online pleaded guilty to stealing and selling 92 million user names and e-mail addresses, setting off an avalanche of up to seven billion unsolicited e-mail messages.

But the disks lost in Britain contained detailed personal information on 40 percent of the population: in addition to the bank account numbers, there were names, addresses and national insurance numbers, the British equivalent of Social Security numbers. They also held data on almost every child under 16.

“This particular breach would dwarf anything we’ve seen in the United States in terms of percentage of the population impacted,” said Paul Stephens, director of policy and advocacy for the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, a nonprofit consumer advocacy group based in California.

The head of the tax agency, Paul Gray, resigned Tuesday, and Prime Minister Gordon Brown apologized to the nation on Wednesday and said he had ordered a review of the government’s handling of all private data. In an address to the House of Commons, he said, “I profoundly regret and apologize for the inconvenience and worries that have been caused to millions of families that receive child benefits.”

The data breach offered the opposition new ammunition. David Cameron, the leader of the opposition Conservative Party, said in Parliament that the government had “failed in its first duty — to protect the public.”

Bank officials said they had scrutinized their records back to Oct. 18, when the disks were mailed, but had discerned no unusual account activity, and the government pledged that no individuals would be responsible for any losses related to the security breach. British families are eligible for a weekly payment of $36.30 for their first child, and $25 per additional child. Those who choose to have the money deposited directly into bank accounts must provide this information to the government.

The disks were protected by a password, the government said, but were not encrypted. They were sent by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, the country’s tax collection agency, to the National Audit Office, which monitors government spending, via a parcel delivery company, TNT.

According to the chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling, who delivered a lengthy explanation to the House of Commons on Tuesday, a “junior” staff member sent the disks. Three weeks later, the tax agency’s managers were informed that the disks had not arrived. Mr. Darling said he was told of the problem two days later, but first had law enforcement officials hunt for the disks and then alerted banks...more

Unlocked iPhones in Germany

To be in compliance with a court ruling, Deutsche Telekom announced today that they will immediately start selling an unlocked iPhone without contract for 999 euro (US $1,477). The iPhone will still be sold, as before, with 2 year contract for 399 euro ($US $590).

Bloomberg reports that customers who purchased the iPhone in Germany after November 19th may have their iPhone unlocked for free. Existing German iPhone customers can reportedly also receive the unlock for a fee.

Prior to this, the only unlocked iPhones in existence have been "hacked" with 3rd party applications. This introduces legitimate unlocked iPhones into the marketplace that will presumably withstand future iPhone software updates.

[BAK2u] Paddy Tan - Asia's Young Entrepreneurs

Businessweek.com

Vote for your favorite among the top two dozen young entrepreneurs in the Asia-Pacific region, where the local creativity is impressing venture capitalists and multinationals alike

By Sonal Rupani

There's never been a better time to be a young entrepreneur in Asia. There are more venture capitalists than ever in the region, many of them recent arrivals from Silicon Valley attracted by the supercharged growth rates in countries such as China, India, and Vietnam. At the same time, multinationals like Intel (INTC), Microsoft (MSFT), and IBM (IBM) are busy funding entrepreneurs too, investing in new companies regionwide. And they're impressed with the creativity they're seeing from local entrepreneurs. Gone are the days when startups were based largely on lower costs than the West. "I've been in this [region] for 10 years, and when you look across these markets, it's fantastic," says John Hummelstad, Singapore-based regional director for emerging technology and venture capital at Microsoft. "It's not just labor arbitrage anymore. It's invention, it's intellectual-property creation."

With this blossoming of entrepreneurship, now is a good time to look at some of the top young entrepreneurs. BusinessWeek.com polled our readers to nominate their candidates for the best young entrepreneurs in the Asia-Pacific region. In this slide show, we've put together a list, based on those nominations as well as suggestions from our editors and reporters, of two dozen of the most impressive ones around. Read about them and vote for your favorite. We'll publish the results soon.

PhoneBak PDA: PDA Theft Recovery Software

"PDA devices are important productivity tools to an ever increasing mobile work force. PDAs and Pocket PCs are getting smaller, while at the same time increasing in processing power, storage and cost . The data that resides on these devices can sometimes be worth more to the owner than the devices themselves. PhoneBak PDA is triggered when the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) in your phone is replaced with an unauthorized one. When this occurs PhoneBak will silently send SMS messages to a pre-defined numbers you have entered (spouse, IT department etc)."

Stolen Laptop at University Exposes 23, 000 Students

At City University of New York a laptop was stolen from a financial aid office. The laptop contained sensitive personal information on the 23,000 current and former students.

Colleges are a hot bed for data theft, primarily due to lax security standards, absent minded professors and the wealth of data available for the taking. Colleges and Universities need to do more to protect student data, it is their responsibility to implement policies and enforce them, as well as educate staff (tenured or not) about the threats posed by careless handling of data. Had GadgetTrak Verey been installed on this laptop, the information on the system would have been difficult to access and the laptop recovered in a short amount of time limiting the risk of identity theft for these students.

Most in HK have choice of three broadband networks: Ofta

Nearly 80% of Hong Kong households have the choice of two fixed-networks for voice and broadband services, says Ofta.

Of the 2.5 million households in the territory, 1.98 million, or 79%, are serviced by two operator-built access networks. Another 1.36 million households (55%) have access to three networks, Ofta said.

The level of competitive choice testified to the success of the government’s facility-based competition policy, Ofta said.

A recent study found that 21.2% of Hong Kong premises are serviced by FTTH or FTTB – the highest in the world, according to the FTTH Councils of Asia Pacific, Europe and North America...more

Professor’s lost flash drive contained 16,000 Social Security numbers

A flash drive containing sensitive personal information was lost by a University of Nevada, Reno professor on October 19th, 2007 somewhere in downtown Reno. Let’s forget the fact that the sensitive data on this drive was NOT encrypted and the mass negligence for even storing such sensitive information on a small drive.

Odds are that the drive and the thief will not be found as there was no way to track the stolen device, as such there will be no way to know what is done with the data.

Had GadgetTrak been installed on this drive, when the thief attempted to access the drive it would have sent information to GadgetTrak that would help the authorities recover the drive, the thief and reduce the risk of identity theft for the 16,000 students whose data was stolen.

Google Announces Open Social Network Platform

Google, seeking to take on Facebook which recently received a cash infusion from Microsoft, announced it is to offer Internet developers an open system to create applications across Web sites. "It is going to forestall Facebook’s ability to get everyone writing just for Facebook," said a person with knowledge of the plans quoted by New York Times.

Google said that its platform will reach more than 100 million users globally, exceeding Facebook's user base. Its early partners include Google’s social network, Orkut, as well as others, including LinkedIn, hi5, Friendster, Plaxo and Ning. Google also said that they would like Facebook to also be part of its project, but the social network leader did not comment yet.

"There is no question Google will benefit from this," Joe Kraus, a Google product manager, said in a Tuesday interview. "Google's role is highly intertwined with the Web, so anything that makes the Web a better experience tends to help Google."

Google already has been irritated by Facebook for recently hiring away some of its top engineers and selling a minority share to rival Microsoft. What its open social network platform will practically mean is that participating software developers will only have to code their applications once, leaving it to Google to ensure they are compatible with all the Web sites in its network...more
