CarPool.SG - The more reasonable way to travel in Singapore

Carpooling is the shared use of a car, especially for commuting to work, often by people who each have a car but travel together to save cost and to promote other socio-environmental benefits.

With the accelerating cost of petrol and the never ending of approvals for public transportation price hikes here in Singapore;

Carpool.sg hopes to provide an alternative for the students here matching those who drive, to "give a lift" to other students traveling between where they stay to where they study.

Will The iPod Kill Blockbuster?

Forget the cavernous big box stores that laid waste to the retail landscape a decade ago. Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs' tiny iPod has turned his company into a category killer for the digital era--first wiping out music stores and now, potentially, the corner video store.

Starting in mid-January, the Cupertino, Calif., computer and gadget maker will take on Blockbuster (nyse: BBI - news - people ) and Netflix (nasdaq: NFLX - news - people ) by renting movies from Fox on its iTunes digital media store, according to a report first published in the Financial Times earlier this week...more

Army Adds Macs To Improve Security

The Army's Apple program to bring more Macs into military facilities is being led by Jonathan Broskey, a former Apple employee who says it's not just that Macs are a less inviting target than Windows; Apple's version of Unix is inherently more secure than Windows, he says. Some observers, however, are taking issue with that assessment...more

Asteroid could hit Mars; scientists hope so

If many scientists get their Christmas wish, an asteroid the size of a Boeing 737 jet will slam into Mars late next month, potentially leaving a crater more than half a mile wide.

Astronomers recently discovered a 164-foot chunk of space rock hurtling toward the Red Planet, and they estimate it has a 1-in-75 chance of making contact - at a cool 30,000 miles per hour - sometime around Jan. 30.

Not exactly a sure thing, but it has researchers giddy at the prospect. Never before have they been able to watch such a large object hitting a solid planet.

"It would be like a free pass: It doesn't hit the Earth and hit anybody but it hits a planet where we can observe the results," said Andrew Fraknoi, chairman of the astronomy program at Foothill College. "Mars fans would go crazy."

While astronomers hope the asteroid - known as 2007 WD5 - actually crashes into the planet, NASA analysts believe it could miss it by some 30,000 miles...more

Latest Version of Firefox 3.0 Goes to Developers

Christmas came a little early for developers this year. Mozilla on Wednesday released the second beta version of Firefox 3.0 that promises enhanced security features and performance capabilities.

The release features an enhanced location bar that matches against page titles and addresses from local history, bookmarks and tags. It also incorporates feedback about security from Beta 1 testers, and includes an "effective top-level domain" that ensures that cookies and other Web content is only visible in a single domain, Mozilla said.

The company cautioned that the release is only geared toward Web developers and Mozilla's testing community, and is not intended for the average Web user..more

"The compatibility patch was submitted, approved and had been scheduled for release by Sony on Tuesday, December 4," Rock Band officials said on Wednesday.

Warning:Theft On The Rise Around Holidays

We are hearing from a lot of law enforcement that they are seeing a rising occurance of theft as we get closer to the holidays. Car burglaries are becoming a particular problem, as opportunistic thieves are prowling parking lots looking to steal shopping bags full of gifts, ruining many people’s Christmas.

In addition to stealing bags other items such as iPods, GPS devices and other gadgets commonly found in cars are being stolen.

Google: Encouraging people to contribute knowledge

The web contains an enormous amount of information, and Google has helped to make that information more easily accessible by providing pretty good search facilities. But not everything is written nor is everything well organized to make it easily discoverable. There are millions of people who possess useful knowledge that they would love to share, and there are billions of people who can benefit from it. We believe that many do not share that knowledge today simply because it is not easy enough to do that. The challenge posed to us by Larry, Sergey and Eric was to find a way to help people share their knowledge. This is our main goal.

Earlier this week, we started inviting a selected group of people to try a new, free tool that we are calling "knol", which stands for a unit of knowledge. Our goal is to encourage people who know a particular subject to write an authoritative article about it. The tool is still in development and this is just the first phase of testing. For now, using it is by invitation only. But we wanted to share with everyone the basic premises and goals behind this project.

The key idea behind the knol project is to highlight authors. Books have authors' names right on the cover, news articles have bylines, scientific articles always have authors -- but somehow the web evolved without a strong standard to keep authors names highlighted. We believe that knowing who wrote what will significantly help users make better use of web content. At the heart, a knol is just a web page; we use the word "knol" as the name of the project and as an instance of an article interchangeably. It is well-organized, nicely presented, and has a distinct look and feel, but it is still just a web page. Google will provide easy-to-use tools for writing, editing, and so on, and it will provide free hosting of the content. Writers only need to write; we'll do the rest...more

[BAK2u] Double booby trap - Sony ericsson and Nokia phones

Hi,

in a lot of spy movies we always see spies carrying gadgets around with them to aid them in hunting down the bad guys. Apparently some of our smart thinking customers made use of our softwares together into the same device to do just that. :)

About 2 weeks ago, we rolled out that latest anti-theft software for Sony Ericsson phones (PhoneBAK SE) and we received favourable responses here in Singapore. At the same time we also have some very interesting feedbacks from customers of BAK2u GadgetTrak (USB Devices) that they are combining both softwares together to boost up the chance of recovery.

About GadgetTrak
GadgetTrak helps owners to track down their stolen gadgets (see right bar) through an intelligent service anywhere in the world!

With a preloaded anti-theft software in the gadget, once flagged by the owner that it is stolen on the website; the next time the device storage is connected it will initiate communication via the internet with the central server.

It will automatically send the necessary information to the owner via email to help recover the stolen gadget! BAK2u GadgetTrak

About PhoneBAK SE
PhoneBAK SE is an innovative lost & found anti-theft software program that sends the thief's contact number and other details to pre-defined phone numbers (e.g. spouse, colleague) when your mobile phone is lost or stolen!

The program works quietly by automatically checking on the user through password authentication when powers up. It sends out 02 customizable SMS Text message alerts (local & overseas) with information of IMEI, phone model and the thief's contact number when the program detects that it is an unauthorized user!

PhoneBAK SE includes a 'eraser' feature, where it will delete all removable files, photos, videos, folders from the internal and phone memory storage card. PhoneBAK SE

Nokia's bold offer: One year's free tunes:

Nokia has thrown down the gauntlet to Big Music with a new service that bundles a year’s free tunes with the purchase of each new mobile device.

The handset vendor’s Comes With Music scheme offers unlimited access to the Universal Music catalog for one year, Nokia said on Tuesday. It said it was in discussions with the other major labels.

The service offers access to millions of tracks for 12 months and allows users to keep their music at the end of the period.

“Even if you listened to music 24 hours a day, seven days a week, you would still only scratch the surface of the music that we're making available,” said Nokia executive vice president and head of multimedia, Anssi Vanjoki...more

Will wireless carriers really open their networks?

AT&T chief scoffs at move by Verizon while admitting that shift is inevitable

Randall Stephenson may have generated headlines last night by announcing a new 3G iPhone for next year, but an even more interesting statement by the AT&T Inc. chief may have been his apparent dismissal of a move by top rival Verizon Wireless to free up its network for other wireless devices.

Stephenson scoffed at Verizon's opening up its wireless network, saying he thought the news was "overblown" because the industry is already heading that way.
"We are probably one of the most open networks in the world," Stephenson said in an interview with Forbes' Quentin Hardy at a Churchill Club dinner in Santa Clara, Calif...more
