Wireless auction bids $3.7 bln

The bidding topped $3.7 billion on the second day of the Federal Communications Commission's auction of government-owned airwaves, but there were no new suitors Friday for a closely watched block of spectrum to be shared with public safety agencies.

The $3.7 billion, up from $2.78 billion on Thursday, represented the highest bids received for five separate blocks of spectrum in the auction, which is eventually expected to net the federal government at least $10 billion....more

Digital Music Sales Grow, but at Slower Rate

As consumers lose interest in compact discs and balk at paying for the digital alternatives, the music industry is looking for new allies, including Internet service providers, lawmakers — even Chinese air guitarists.

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry said Thursday that worldwide digital music sales rose to $2.9 billion last year, from $2.1 billion a year earlier. That was about 15 percent of overall sales, up from 11 percent a year earlier and less than 1 percent in 2003.

But digital sales have yet to make up for the shortfall in sales of compact discs, and overall sales of recorded music fell about 10 percent last year, to $17.6 billion, the federation estimated. A recovery in the music industry remains at least a year away, the federation’s chief executive, John Kennedy, said...more

iPhones piling up at AT&T stores

AT&T, the exclusive American carrier of the iPhone, activated just 900,000 iPhones during the fourth quarter, the company revealed during its earnings conference call Thursday. It wrapped up the year with "just at or slightly under 2 million iPhone customers," according to company executives.

Apple announced at Macworld that it has sold 4 million iPhones through the middle of January, and Toni Sacconaghi, a financial analyst with Sanford C. Bernstein, thinks the gap between the figures means that Apple might have a demand problem. He released a research note Thursday after AT&T's earnings saying that the carrier's figures imply that an awful lot of inventory is building up at Apple's channel partners...more

Vista SP1 Due Out in Next Few Weeks

The wait is nearly over for the first service pack for Windows Vista, according to sources close to Microsoft.

Microsoft has said the highly anticipated service pack would be out in the first quarter of this year, but some say it could be available in the next few weeks, more than a month before the quarter ends on March 31.

A Taiwanese news outlet Wednesday reported in a story that Vista SP1 would be released Feb. 15, but "that date is as good as any other," said Michael Cherry, an analyst with Directions on Microsoft. "For all we know, they could make it available tomorrow."..more

Retrenchment @ Yahoo

Internet portal Yahoo is about to lay of “hundreds” of staff, the New York Times and Wall Street Journal have reported.

The diverse portal, which currently employs 14,000 employees, is under pressure over its weak stock price and poor profitability while rival Google streaks away in search and search ad segments.

It is expected to provide details of cutbacks at its quarterly result announcement on January 29.

Despite the likely cuts, sources told the Journal that Yahoo expected to finish 2008 with about the same number of workers as it had at the end of 2007.

The iPhone Goes Corporate

AT&T and the iPhone have gone corporate. Despite the opinion of many analysts, AT&T is now labeling the iPhone an Enterprise-class device. My question, as with my earlier AT&T SIM-only story is, why is this all that great again?

The reason I say this is because if you compare the data plans between the consumer and corporate plans, you’ll pay $25 more a month. Oh, wait, if you read the fine print, here’s the answer...more

New MacBook Pros?

One of the biggest surprises of Macworld 2008 was the lack of an announcement on the professional line of Apple laptops. Most pundits, myself included were expecting these to come out last week.

That doesn't mean Apple's pro customers are going to have to wait much longer. A few of the stars are aligning that may bring Apple's flagship laptops a much needed upgrade within the next few months.

The biggest factor are Intel's new 45nm mobile Penryn chips. While the obvious choice for the MacBook Pros (fastest processors built for mobile computing, less heat, smaller size, etc.), word is trickling in that they have been delayed due to an issue with the thermal sensors. According to the report/rumor they won't be available in large numbers until the end of Febrary. If true, Apple may have intended to announce these new Pro machines at Macworld but were forced to delay because of the chip shortage....more

[BAK2u] Testimonial - Mr. Stephen See

"When Bak2U first launched the version for BlackBery, I told myself that this is a must have application. For the investment made on the phone and most importantly, the information that can be found on the mobile phone these days, this application should be included in every Blackberry sold. The insurance to have the peace of mind in retrieving the phone back is certainly worth the price.

The support team from Bak2U, including Paddy himself, have been most responsive to my problems in getting the program to work perfectly in my device and this is what I call good support services. Well done, guys!"

[BAK2u] Review: Verey I Anti-Theft Software for Macs

Review: Youngupstarts.com

vereyi1

Whoever steals my beloved MacBook Pro will know the meaning of a slow, lingering death.

I’ve just installed my 15″ MBPro with Bak2u’s Verey I anti-theft software for Mac laptops and desktops, which Blog2u.sg offered me to try out. Since I carry my MBPro around quite a bit and do get paranoid about losing it, I like totally jumped at the chance.

Now with my newly Verey-protected MBPro, if you can’t provide the right password within a certain amount of time (from 5 to 100 seconds - I set mine at 100), the software sends the following information to my predetermined email:

  • Your network information, and those of the computers around you (which means, of course, even those of your neighbours); and
  • Your ugly mug through video capture with sound (thanks to iSight)...more

ive lost my Nokia 3250(pink) mobile phone on the 12 Jan 08(Sat), at Viviocity's Topshop, the time which i have lost it is within 6.30pm to 730pm. I tried calling my mobile number using my boyfriend's phone, first time it rang but no one picked up. second time onwards, the line was cannot get through..

I remember the time when i last took my mobile out from my bag is at the Topshop, i was looking for my topshop F3 member card. After that i couldnt recall if i had put the mobile back to my bag or kept it held in my hand, all i can remember is that i continued with my shopping with a couple of clothes i picked and head to the fitting room. I realised my lost of mobile in the fitting room, as my mobile was switched to silent mode, i was worried that my boyfriend would call me to ask where i am. so i went searching my phone from my bag but its not at sight, i quickly rushed out of the fitting room to find my boyfriend who is at Topman and we went approached Topshop's counter to check if anyone surrendered the phone to them but sadly no. i tried looking all over the shop and even seek the manager's help to check the staffs bag but still its not found.

im devastated..im so worried that the findder might sell away my handphone..im hoping the finder can see this lost and found notice of mine and return back the phone to me asap. I have alot of important pictures, videos and contacts which i need badly. Pls, if you happen to find my phone pls contact me. Thanks!

Intel Quits One Laptop Per Child Program

Intel Corp said on Thursday it will drop out of the One Laptop Per Child project and resign from the board after the project's board demanded the chipmaker stop supporting other efforts in emerging markets.

[BAK2u] Review: PhoneBAK PDA (PDA Phones)

Review: blog.simplyjean.com

PhoneBAK for O2 Zinc by Bak2U (bärk-tə-yōō) is probably one of the most amazing software I have ever installed in my entire life till this point in time. My ActiveSync didn’t work as I thought it would - which I later discovered to be a setting on my PDA. Despite this, all it took was for me to copy the .cab file to my PDA to run on it. This is just the beginning of the fun part…

DSC01352

Ok, I have to admit that I am not a manual’s person - which means I don’t usually like to RTFM (read the friendly manual), but the installation process is intuitive enough for me to get to this stage.

After installing it, I didn’t see any icons in the Programs directory - which is quite a good thing because you won’t want the person who found/took your phone to know that you have PhoneBAK installed. So being a geek, I went into the Program Files directory where I found the directory. Clicking on PhoneBak.exe, the program fired up. As I didn’t want to mess up any settings, I opened the PDF file that came together with the software...more

[BAK2u] Review: PhoneBAK SE (Sony Ericsson)

Review: Mandrake.liquidblade.com

I received a copy of the Bak2U software from http://www.bak2u.com for my Sony Ericsson K800i.

Its basically a software that run once in the background everything you restart your phone. If you key in the wrong password, it will send two sms to two numbers that you had specified. One local and one international.

What this does is to allow you to know who had put their SIM card into your phone when you had misplaced it. You can then either call the person up to arrange for a meet up to collect the phone or you can just go make a police report, whichever the person wants from you. I believe its easier to do a meet up and get the phone.

There are two functions in this software alone. One is the bak2u main feature, the sms function. The other is the Eraser feature. What it does is to erase all the info, sms, pictures, mp3s from your phone as well as the memory card. Well, if Tammy and countless others have this feature enabled, then their pictures won’t appear on the net or sold as porn in Malaysia...more

Mobile Hard Drives Hit 500GB

Notebook PC disk storage leaps into the stratosphere today, hitting the half-terabyte mark with Hitachi Global Storage Technologies' announcement of a 500GB 2.5-inch mobile hard drive.

Due out in February 2008, the $400 Travelstar 5K500 drive will dramatically expand the capacity possible in today's notebook PC designs.

Hitachi's announcement makes it the largest capacity mobile 2.5-inch hard drive. Previous high-water capacity marks for 2.5-inch drives included Fujitsu's 300GB drive and Toshiba's 320GB drive. Hitachi's jump to 500GB represents a whopping 36 percent increase in a single bound. (Hitachi also announced a 400GB version for $350.)

In order to achieve this landmark capacity, Hitachi didn't so much advance areal density as it did rethink the drive's design. Hitachi moved to a three platter design, as opposed to the typical two-platter approach for a 2.5-inch hard drive.

According to Hitachi, although the drive itself will occupy a 2.5-inch chassis, the drive mechanism inside the drive enclosure will be a bit thicker than the usual height of a drive. Typically, drives are 9.5mm in thickness; the 500GB drive will be 12.5mm, due to the additional disk platter.

The 5400rpm 500GB drive has 167GB per platter, the highest capacity per platter drive announced. Toshiba's 320GB drive packs in 160GB per platter.

Notably, the power consumption of this drive is practically the same as that of Hitachi's two-platter drive, the 5K250...more

Data breaches reached record high in '07, groups say

The loss or theft of personal data such as credit card and Social Security numbers soared to unprecedented levels in 2007, and the trend isn't expected to turn around anytime soon as hackers stay a step ahead of security and laptops disappear with sensitive information, an Associated Press report said.

The Associated Press report said while companies, government agencies, schools and other institutions are spending more to protect ever-increasing volumes of data with more sophisticated firewalls and encryption, the investment often is too little too late.

"More of them are experiencing data breaches, and they're responding to them in a reactive way, rather than proactively looking at the company's security and seeing where the holes might be," Linda Foley, who founded the San Diego-based Identity Theft Resource Center after becoming an identity theft victim herself, quoted by the Associated Press report said.

Teh Associated Press report said Foley's group lists more than 79 million records reported compromised in the US through December 18. That's a nearly fourfold increase from the nearly 20 million records reported in all of 2006...more

[BAK2u] Review: PhoneBAK BB (Blackberry Edition)

Review: Nowhere.per.sg

BAK2u Pte Ltd has officially released the retail version of PhoneBAK for Blackberry (PhoneBAK BB) during the New Year of 2008, and all the beta testers (including me) who assisted in testing the beta have been given a retail copy of the software for free.

But, do we need PhoneBAK at all? After all, when you lose your phone, the chances are that it’s almost impossible to recover it, right? And all you can do is whine about your misfortune and go to the nearest mobile phone shop to get a new one, isn’ it?

Not anymore!!

The beauty of PhoneBAK BB is that it allows you to recover your Blackberry when it is stolen or lost. Once the ‘happy new owner’ removes your SIM and puts in a new one, PhoneBAK BB will compare the SIM ID of the new SIM with the one registered, and as long as they do not tally, a SMS and email will be sent to a pre-defined mobile number and email address.

The email will contain the following information, the IMEI of the stolen / lost Blackberry, and the IMSI (i.e. the SIM ID), GSM Area Code & GSM Localization Cell ID. The SMS will include the same information, plus the mobile number of the ‘happy new owner’ ....more

New Gadget For Christmas? New Year For Stolen iPods, Cell Phones and Laptops

There has been a lot of questions coming in regarding tracking solutions for iPods and other gadgets. The main reason being that a lot of folks have received them as Christmas presents this year and are a bit afraid to bring them back to school, on the bus, leave them in the car, or even just plain walk down the street with them for fear of the device being stolen. Their fears are well grounded. According to the Urban Institute’s “iCrime” report there is evidence to suggest that an increasingly mobile society has led to an increase in theft and violent theft at that.

GadgetTrak, who has been mentioned on this site before offers several solutions to help this issue. The original GadgetTrak USB product was developed with removable media and gadgets such as iPods in mind. When a device is stolen the software can send data back that helps lead to recovery such as general location, user name, computer name and other data. This system is the first product on the market that enabled device owners a means of theft recovery for their devices. The agent software leverages some interesting characteristics such as evading firewalls and sending data over a secure connection with some new advancements on the way.

The second product GadgetTrak PhoneBak offered is for cellular phones and takes a somewhat similar approach only utilizing wireless networks. When a thief steals a phone it is essentially worthless after 48 hours unless they switch the SIM card in the phone, when this occurs their software detects the change and triggers software to send data via SMS to pre-defined numbers.

GadgetTrak now also offer Mac theft recovery software, even utilizing the built in iSight camera to capture video of thieves, information regarding wireless networks in the area and a bevy of other data that helps with theft recovery. The data is all collected without the use of a central server, or any sort of monitoring by GadgetTrak, the information is sent to the owner’s email account(s). There is also an option to integrate the software with Twitter, for additional notifications. There are theft recovery solutions out there for PC’s that kind of give me the willies as they rely on a “Big Brother” model, with your system constantly communicating with a central server. GadgetTrak does not currently offer a PC solution, but it is nice to see a solution specifically targeted towards Macs.

In addition to all of these booby traps for thieves, GadgetTrak also offers lost and found tags for those who are kind enough to return an item if it is simply found.

GadgetTrak although a young company, even has some recoveries under their belt. So if you have a new gadget, make sure to keep it close and if you are worried about theft you might want to take a look at GadgetTrak.

Qualcomm Loses Patent Dispute

A federal judge ordered Qualcomm Inc. to stop marketing cellphone chips that infringe on three Broadcom Corp. patents, though Qualcomm can keep selling some of the chips for the next 13 months if it pays royalties to Broadcom.

The ruling by U.S. District Judge James Selna is the latest in a series of recent court victories by Broadcom against Qualcomm. The two Southern California chip makers have filed a series of suits against each other, after failing to reach an agreement to license each other's patents.

Broadcom accused Qualcomm in May 2005 of infringing the three patents in a suit filed in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana, Calif. The patents cover digital video technology, technology for allowing cellphones to use two or more networks simultaneously and a "push-to-talk" feature that allows cellphone users to work like walkie-talkie radios...more
