'I hope I don't have to use this software :) I encountered installation problems and emailed the cust service. Received step by step instruction on how to remove and install the software again. Even after installation, I still had problems but still, I had the same level of efficient, excellent and patient support thru the email. Manage to install the software and the settings done. High-tech GPS devices in vehicles are magnets for thieves
Pat Jensen never really got to know her global positioning system device. Her children had bought a GPS unit for her in December because of what she admits is her “really bad sense of direction.”
On Jan. 5, while her son was visiting a friend on Mariner Street in Buffalo, someone smashed a window and broke into her Volkswagen Passat. The thief took the GPS device, her son’s video iPod, a Dell laptop and a $175 pair of sunglasses.
“I literally had just gotten it for Christmas. I had it in the car for just a day or two. I had used it one time. Bummer,” said Jensen, who is in her 40s and runs a nonprofit organization.
The Delaware District resident is a victim of the latest trend in car break-ins — GPS thefts.
Portable GPS receivers cost several hundred dollars or more, and they were among the hottest consumer-electronic gifts of the recent holiday season.
So it’s no surprise that thieves are targeting them in car break-ins, police said, grabbing them right off the windshield or from glove compartments and other hiding places.
“The GPSs are just the item of the day, so to speak,” said University at Buffalo Police Chief Gerald W. Schoenle Jr.
Police in Buffalo, Amherst and Niagara Falls and at UB have seen a spike in thefts of these portable navigation units.
No longer satisfied with taking the car stereo, thieves are stealing GPS devices, cell phones, MP3 players and other electronic gadgets.
The Erie County Sheriff’s Office, for example, is investigating the thefts of six GPS units late Saturday and early Sunday in just one Clarence subdivision.
“It’s a target. It’s like leaving a bull’s-eye on your car. ‘Come steal me,’ ” said Patrol Chief Dennis Rankin.
Police are stepping up efforts to crack down on these break-ins, while cautioning users to be more aware of the potential for theft.
And some technology experts say the companies that make these devices need to do more to make it harder for thieves to resell or reuse them.
“As there is more crime, the manufacturers are going to step in,” said Ken Westin, founder of GadgetTrak, a company in Portland, Ore., that sells software that can be installed in electronic devices to help their rightful owners find them if they are stolen...more

Siemens plans to cut 7,000 jobs at telecom unit
Industrial conglomerate Siemens will cut 7,000 jobs from its corporate telecommunications unit Siemens Enterprise Networks, officials with knowledge of the plans, quoted by an Associated Press report, said.
The cuts would amount to about 40% of the telecom unit's worldwide work force of 17,500 people, the Associated Press report further said.
Four thousand jobs would be eliminated outright while 3,000 other workers would be shifted to other units or to company partners, according to the officials who asked not to be identified by name because the official announcement had not yet been made, the report said.
The firm designs large-scale communications systems for corporations, but has come under pressure from the availability of cheaper internet-based telephone systems which has eaten away at its customer base and sales, the report further said.
The Munich-based company intends to announce the cuts after a meeting of its economic advisory committee, according to the officials, the report added.
The Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper reported the planned cuts on Sunday...more

Disk Encryption Not Secure
Researchers with Princeton University and the Electronic Frontier Foundation have found a flaw that renders disk encryption systems useless if an intruder has physical access to your computer -- say in the case of a stolen laptop or when a computer is left unattended on a desktop in sleep mode or while displaying a password prompt screen.
The attack takes only a few minutes to conduct and uses the disk encryption key that's stored in the computer's RAM.
The attack works because content as well as encryption keys stored in RAM linger in the system, even after the machine is powered off, enabling an attacker to use the key to collect any content still in RAM after reapplying power to the machine.
"We've broken disk encryption products in exactly the case when they seem to be most important these days: laptops that contain sensitive corporate data or personal information about business customers," said J. Alex Halderman, one of the researchers, in a press release. "Unlike many security problems, this isn't a minor flaw; it is a fundamental limitation in the way these systems were designed."
The researchers successfully performed the attack on several disk encryption systems -- Apple's FileVault, Microsoft's BitLocker, as well as TrueCrypt and dm-crypt -- but said they have no reason to believe it won't work on other disk encryption systems as well, since they all share similar architectures.
They released a paper about their work as well as a video demonstration of the attack (below).

Google to invest on small firms in India
The Associated Press report said the Small to Medium Enterprise Investment Co. would fill the gap between loans offered by microfinance institutions and those of large commercial banks and private equity funds.
The report quoted Google.org's Sonal Shah as saying that Indian businesses of small and medium size do not have the same financing opportunities as provided in rich countries.
"Our goal is to increase the flow of capital to SMEs in India. This is an important step in helping to attract commercial capital and reduce dependency on philanthropy or soft capital to fund this industry."
There is a huge demand for loans targeted at small and medium businesses, said Neal DeLaurentis, vice president of Soros Economic Development Fund.

[BAK2u] Lost of A Green Elle pouch @ Yoshinoya, Bugis Junction
My wife and two other kids were with me at the queue. The other two of my kids were sitting and playing near the pouch but was not aware that the pouch was on the seat. When we arrived at the restaurant, we were aware that there was a group of people sitting back-to-back to our seat. After lunch, we realised the pouch was missing and we were really very upset as it was the second day of CNY and we were on the way to visit our relatives. We hoped that the pouch had dropped and someone had picked it to return later.
We tried to call the handphone and it was ringing but after a while the line just went dead. All the photos on the digital camera has not been downloaded before and it contains my kid's communion in church and birthday and family photos.
I sincerely hope that the person who picked the pouch could return me the items as it contains memorable pictures, and friend's contacts. Thank you.

Thieves want your GPS, dude -- so, watch it!
![]() |
News 11 ran this investigative report on GPS unit thievery on Wednesday night at 11 p.m.
They are expected to be one of the hottest items for the holidays -- and why not -- when they can make our lives so much easier?
GPS units, or navigation systems, can not only help you find your way, they can help plan your life.
"So you can type in a barbecue restaurant or even your favorite Italian restaurant and it will take you to any one of those," says Javin Mendoza, the manager of TAS Electronics on Telegraph Rd. in west Toledo.
Mendoza expects big sales in navigation units because prices are coming down and the technology is getting more and more exciting. But there is a downside -- thieves like them even more.
Scott Barber bought a GPS system and when he was done driving, he hid it in the center console. One day, his system became an "easy target."
"The neighbor knocked on my door and said, 'Hey there's somebody breaking into your car," Barber says. When he got out to his car, the thieves had taken off with his prized navigation unit.
"Thieves are stealing these like hotcakes. No matter which zip code you live in, you can find examples of these units being stolen," says John Townsend, with AAA Motor Club.
Many navigation systems are portable and if you leave them in your car, it can be easy pickings for criminals. They can get hundreds of dollars for them on eBay or the black market. Adding to the problem, many people enter their home address into the unit, as a home base for directions on the road.
"So if your device is stolen, the thief using it will have your home address. And the danger that we run is that he can come to your house and also burglarize your home," Townsend says.
Some of Mendoza's customers here in Toledo have had their GPS systems stolen. He has this advice.
"You should treat your GPS system like would an iPod or any other portable device you keep in your car. Cell phone -- aways remove it whenever you get out of the vehicle, lock it up in your glove box and take it with you wherever you go," Mendoza says.
It is pretty simple to protect your GPS system from being stolen. A few models snap right off so you can take them with you.
Many navigation systems come with security devices that require a pin number. You must have the code to unlock the system and use it. A thief may still get a hold of it, but without your code, it's useless to them.
Basically the way you know is you press button number one, that will let you know when it is locked and unlocked. You can also buy a remote alarm that lets you know up to two miles away, when your car is being broken into.
And when you do remove the portable unit, wipe off the suction mark left behind on the windshield or dash. That way-- you can still find your way-- but send a potential thief on a detour.

Yahoo to reject Microsoft bid - source
Yahoo plans to reject Microsoft's $44.6 billion takeover bid, the Wall Street Journal reported Saturday, citing a person familiar with the situation.
The source, according to the paper, said Yahoo's board believes Microsoft's offer of $31 per share "massively undervalues" the company and does not account for the risk that a deal could be blocked by regulators.
The source also said that the company is unlikely to consider any offer below $40 per share, according to the paper. Such a premium would increase the value of the takeover offer by $12 billion.
Microsoft would not comment to Fortune on the report. Yahoo did not return a call seeking comment.
On Feb. 1, Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500) made an unsolicited $44.6 billion cash and stock bid for Yahoo (YHOO, Fortune 500). The bid represented a 62% premium over Yahoo stock price one day earlier....more

Polaroid to stop producing instant film
U.S.-based Polaroid says it will stop producing its instant photo film by next year, ending a photographic run that began in 1948.
The Waltham, Mass.-based company is closing factories in the United and overseas because of a market lost to digital cameras that fit in a pocket and don't need film or processing emulsion to produce an image, The Washington Post reported Saturday.
Polaroid introduced the Land Camera, which used rolled film, in 1948, and switched to cartridge film in 1963 with the introduction of its 100-series camera, favored by professional photographers who shot instant test photos before committing an image to negative, the Post said.
Polaroid's most popular period dawned with the introduction of SX-70 in 1972 and the company's employment peaked in 1978.

Five Most Stolen Gadgets
GadgetTrak got listed as a solution for just about every device type listed. Details
iPods
Since iPods and other audio players are valuable, don't require subscriptions to use, and lack built-in theft deterrents, they're very popular for thieves. Major cities have begun cautioning commuters, like New York's Metropolitan Transit Authority, which released a poster reminding subway riders that "Earphones are a giveaway. Protect your device." In San Francisco, iPod robberies on the Bay Area Rapid Transit system accounted for 23% of the increase in citywide robbery from 2004 to 2006.
Laptops
Now that laptops are smaller and more popular with both home and business users, they're increasingly in danger of being stolen. Even worse, they're rarely recovered – Safeware, an insurance company specializing in computers, estimates 5% of laptops will be stolen within 12 months of purchase and only 3% of those will be returned.
Cell Phones
Whether it's because of theft or drunken stupidity, finding yourself phoneless can cause big trouble. It's estimated that 600,000 phones will be lost or stolen in a year, and there have been several cases of people footing the bill for unauthorized calls. Unlike credit card issuers, cell phone companies may still hold you responsible for charges made after a theft, leading to some unfortunate cases where victims were liable for thousands of dollars in charges, even after they proved they didn't make the calls. It's all in the contract's fine print, so be careful.
GPS Devices
The gadget that has seen one of the largest increases in theft the portable GPS system. Small, valuable, and easy to spot in unattended vehicles, these devices are getting snatched up because they're often easy to resell for around $100 a piece. Many of them are resold in secondhand electronics stores, sometimes in contraband packaging as new or slightly used. In fact, many areas are reporting over 100% increases in the amount of stolen GPS systems. Montgomery County, Maryland even had an increase of 328%, from 189 in 2006 to 620 in 2007.
Car Stereos
Even if you're not carrying a GPS unit, chances are you still have a stereo system in your car. While stereo theft is down due to the variety in models and sizes, custom decks, speakers, and other equipment are still prime for theft – thanks a lot, 'Pimp My Ride' – due to their high value.
