New goodies unveiled at GPS Workshop (Malaysia)

The handheld enthusiasts group, PDACrafters.com’s GPS Workshop at Starbucks, Plaza Berjaya in Jalan Imbi, Kuala Lumpur on 24 May was attended by about 20 people.

Suppliers conducted presentations, demonstrations and gave sneak previews of GPS devices, while attendees, some of whom came from outstation.

ASUSTeK Computer’s diminutive ASUS P320 PDA-phone which made its debut at CeBIT in Hannover, is scheduled to be media-launched in Malaysia early this month (June) at a price to be announced, its channel management specialist, Huai Pin Li told Mobile World at the PDACrafters.com’s GPS Workshop at Starbucks, Plaza Berjaya on 24 May.

The quadband GPRS & EDGE device includes the SiRF Star III GPS receiver, 201MHz TI OMAP 850 CPU, Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional OS, 2.8" 65K colours QVGA TFT touchscreen, 2 megapixels camera, 128MB ROM and 64MB RAM, MicroSD card slot, Bluetooth 2.0 and USB 2.0 connectivity.

Measuring 99 x 55 x 13 mm and weighing 105 g it easily slips into the short pocket.

Calvin Yeap, marketing manager with Mobitrak, the Malaysian subsidiary of Singapore-based navigation and location-based applications provider AGIS gave the workshop a preview of AGIS NAVFone and AGIS NAVDrive navigation and location software, while will be formally launched later.

It’s available for Microsoft Pocket PC 2003, Windows Mobile 5 and 6, Symbian OS9 S60 3rd Edition and Symbian OS9 UIQ devices and it’s also bundled with GPS-enabled Nokia N96 and 6110 Navigator, Samsung i780 and i550W smartphones, Sony Ericsson, MWg, Asus and Palm handsets

ImageRegistered customers can buy and download the software installer or just the maps from AGIS website at www.asiagis.com, or they can buy a scratch card containing the serial number which they enter into NAVFone, the first time they run it.

Prices range from US$28 for a map part of a country in South-East Asia, including Malaysia up to over US$100 for the software for Windows Mobile or Pocket PC 2003 plus a suite of maps.

A scratch card with the license for the software and maps for Peninsular Malaysia only costs RM250 from resellers such as The Gadgets Shop in Low Yat Plaza.

The license is tied to the phone’s IMEI number and is not transferable, except with permission for AGIS, should the phone’s motherboard been replaced.

NAVDrive runs on Windows CE platforms, so it’s not sold directly to end users but is bundled with devices at the factory.

Malaysia distributor of the BAK2u range of anti-theft software for mobile phone, PDA-phones, BlackBerry, Windows and MacOS notebook PCs explained it at the GPS workshop.

Image BAK2u PhoneBAK runs when the phone is turned on and if it detects the SIM has been changed, it asks for the password entered by the user and if the wrong password is entered, it sends an SMS with the new number and the phone’s IMEI number to two pre-configured mobile numbers, so they can call the new user to request he or she return the phone, which according to marketing manager, James Tai, they usually do, especially in countries where prepaid subscribers are required to register.

PhoneBAK runs on Symbian OS 6 through OS 9 phones, Java, Sony Ericsson, Windows Mobile 5 and 6 smartphones, while BAK2u Verey I runs on Windows XP, Vista and Mac OS and BAK2u GadgetTrak runs on removal devices such as MP3 players, USB drives, digital cameras and so on.

Prices range from RM58 for a phone up to RM98 for a notebook PC.

On notebook PCs it installs on and requests the password before booting up and the password is entered wrongly, at the earliest opportunity upon connecting to the Internet, it will send an e-mail containing information such as its IP address, the machine’s serial number, the IP address of the wireless network it’s on and the latitude and longitude (GadgetTrak USB) of its location to a pre-configured e-mail address

RCG Malaysia showed its RCG GS 961 GPS car navigation device and the smaller GS 710. Both have been available for about six months.

Both are powered by a Samsung S3C2440A-40 CPU, run the Windows CE OS and besides navigation, they play videos, music, display digital pictures and text documents like their many Windows CE-based competitors available today.

The GS 961 has the larger 4.3 in, 480 x 272 pixels, TFT touch-screen, Bluetooth 1.2, MapKing GPS maps of Malaysia and Singapore, and Malsing Maps of Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah & Sarawak and of Singapore. It costs RM1,599 including a 2GB SD Card.

Priced at RM1,299, the GS 710 is smaller with a 3.5 in, 320 x 240 pixels TFT touch-screen. It has no Bluetooth and plays three video file types compared to its larger sibling which plays about 8 video formats.

Apple signs iPhone deals for Hong Kong, Macau

Hutchison Telecommunications Limited said Thursday that it has signed an agreement with Apple to bring the iPhone to Hong Kong and Macau later this year.

Similar to other international iPhone carrier announcements over the past two months, Hutchison offered no further details other than to say service for the touch-screen handset would be offered under its "3" brand.

As of last August, "3" had 15.9 registered subscribers across its nine mobile telecommunications networks in Europe, Asia and Australia. All of 3's branded networks emphasize "mobile multimedia" and provide 3G wireless access.

The announcement is the first for China, a blistering market Apple has repeatedly promised to infiltrate by year's end.

There had been on-again-of-again rumors that suggested that Apple was also speaking to China Mobile about launching the iPhone in China, though executives for both sides (1, 2) have denied such claims.

China Mobile maintains a subscriber base in excess of 380 million -- more than the population of the United States and by far the largest in the world.

Despite lacking an official distribution agreement, the carrier is reported to be providing service to some 400,000 first-generation iPhones that have been unlocked and smuggled into China for those subscribers unwilling to wait on official availability.

Further details about Apple's plans to launch iPhone in China are likely to manifest on June 9th, when company chief executive Steve Jobs is widely expected to take the wraps off a 3G iPhone and outline a roll out strategy.

Microsoft Unveils Multi-Touch Technology For Windows 7

The next version of Windows will support multi-touch touch screens, Microsoft announced Tuesday night at the Wall Street Journal's All Things Digital Conference. The inclusion of multi-touch capabilities in Windows marks the surest sign yet that touch will join the mouse and keyboard as a common interface in computing.

"Touch-enabled surfaces are popping up everywhere, including laptop touch pads, cell phones, remote controls, GPS devices, and more," Chris Flores, a director on Microsoft's Windows client communications team, wrote in a blog post. "What becomes even more compelling is when this experience is delivered to the PC, on a wide variety of Windows notebooks, in all-in-one PC's, as well as in external monitors."

Microsoft has firmly put its stake in the ground in touch technologies already, last year announcing the tabletop Surface multi-touch computer, which is beginning to show up in AT&T stores and will soon make its public debut in places like Sheraton hotels and Harrah's casinos. Windows Vista has some single touch capabilities for tablet PCs, though those have flown largely under the radar. Microsoft also has a number of touch technologies in development at Microsoft Research. Earlier this month, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates demonstrated a multi-touch office whiteboard called TouchWall.

Microsoft's corporate VP for Windows experience program management, Julie Larson-Green, demonstrated Windows' multi-touch capabilities on a Dell Latitude tablet PC on stage at the All Things Digital conference. Microsoft also released an accompanying demonstration video that showed the capabilities being used on both a laptop and desktop PC....more

Samsung intros 256GB SSD that may reach MacBook Air

Samsung has introduced a 256GB solid-state drive that promises to kickstart the industry with twice the storage and twice the speed of earlier disks while also costing less to manufacture than past models -- and having a chance of landing in future Apple notebooks.

Simply called the 256GB FlashSSD, the Serial ATA drive reads in-order data at 200MB per second, or double the rate of Samsung's past 128GB drive. It also boosts write speeds, often a bottleneck on solid-state drives, from 70MB per second to 160MB.

But the real advancement, Samsung says, is in the manufacturing process. Past drives, including the 128GB model, have depended on flash memory using a technique known as single-level cell storage. While quick and reliable, the inability to store more than one bit of data in each cell results in a high cost per drive. The prices of single-level cell drives have often been a hurdle to notebooks, with options for the MacBook Air and other systems frequently costing $1,000 or more to switch to the faster technology.

The 256GB drive changes this by switching to a new approach to multi-level cell storage that allegedly solves the problems of the format. The technology allows data to be much more densely packed, but has traditionally been slow and short-lived. However, a new drive controller not only gives it the same speed as single-level storage but gives it the same kind of longevity, at roughly one million hours before a failure occurs.

As it's more efficient in storing data, the multi-level cell technology is also "considerably" less expensive to make, though Samsung has stopped short of revealing the exact difference.

Until now, Apple has left multi-level cell flash memory to its iPhone and iPod devices, which are less dependent on speed and heavy disk access, but whether the MacBook Air or other Apple portables will use the the storage is unknown. Samsung plans a 1.8-inch version of the 256GB drive that will ship before the end of the year, and has been Apple's sole choice for the MacBook Air's solid-state drive to date: a 64GB drive is used inside Air models configured with the SSD storage option.

Other potential candidates have surfaced since the introduction of the ultraportable, however. Intel is reportedly preparing its own line of high-speed drives for release in the next quarter, while smaller rival STEC is claimed to have wrested the contract for the MacBook Air away from Samsung.

The Korean memory chip producer itself doesn't provide any direct clues, but mentions that it's "actively involved" in helping integrate solid-state drives into the systems of every top computer manufacturer in the US.

Online piracy group member gets convicted - $250,000 USD fine and jail.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Barry Gitarts, a "key member" of the online music piracy group release group Apocalypse Production Crew (APC) has been convicted of conspiracy to commit criminal copyright infringement and faces up to five years in prison, a $250,000 USD fine and three years probation at sentencing.

The DOJ added Gitarts was a member in 2003 and 2004 and paid for and administered the computer server used to upload "hundreds of thousands of copies of pirated music, movies, software and video games."

"Music piracy is stealing and, unless you want to end up in a federal prison, don't do it," Chuck Rosenberg, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, said in a statement.

The RIAA praised the government for brining the case to trial and praised the conviction as well.

"The crimes committed here -- as well as the harm to the music community -- are severe, and so are the consequences," Brad Buckles, the RIAA's executive vice president for antipiracy, said in a statement. "Groups like APC that specialize in leaking pre-release music are at the top of the piracy pyramid, and the efforts of federal law enforcement have dealt a real blow to these kinds of operations."

The case was part of the federal investigation known as Operation Fastlink, which is looking into organized piracy groups, those known to be at the top of all warez before it trickles down to the home BitTorrent and P2P user. The operation has already seen 56 total convictions for release group members.

Data Protection

It is very important in today's IT environment that sensitive and valuable data need protection. This is because many organizations nowadays give their staff workstations to increase efficiency. Confidential information which stored in these workstations is always at risk of being accessed by unauthorized parties if leave unattended.

FAST easySafe provides the protection to the users to store their confidential documents into an electronic vault by generating an encrypted "virtual" disk drive in the computer. Users can easily store their sensitive and valuable data in this electronic vault. They can create, save, move and copy files on it in exactly the same way as they have always done without noticing any difference between using the "virtual" disk drive and a "normal" one. FAST easySafe also is more secure as the security is controlled by a separate hardware instead of using the security software that is installed in the computer.

Benefits of FAST easySafe:

- Protects valuable and sensitive data on hard disk by generating an encrypted virtual disk drive

- No/minimal training effort required for users

How Often Do You Lose Your Laptop?

The computer security is not all about antiviruses, antispyware technologies or any other software solution being installed on the system. It also refers to users' negligence that often boosts the attacks, data loss or any other leakage concerning private information. According to a research conducted by the Ponemon Institute, 39 percent of the employees included in the questionnaire said they had lost their PDA, their mobile phone or their laptop, all the devices containing private details. What's more impressive is that 51 percent of the IT professionals said they had already copied confidential information onto a USB memory stick, which made the data loss a serious problem in case the device got stolen.

"Data breaches remain the leading cause of financial losses in business, with over 75 percent of Fortune 1000 companies falling victims to data leakage, and this is not going to change without improvements in the enforcement of data security policies," said Vimal Vaidya, found and chief executive officer at RedCannon, the company that sponsored the survey.

"This study clearly indicates key data management practices that have a serious impact on data security and regulatory compliance, and highlights ways organizations can bolster policy enforcement and reduce the risks of potential data loss," it is added in a press release published on the official website of the Ponemom Institute.

In addition, no less than 45 percent of the employees said they had access web-based email accounts from the workplace computers, whereas the same percentage admitted they downloaded personal software on the workstation. Disabling the security features on the work computers was a popular activity for 17 percent of the respondents, while no less than 46 percent of the employees said they had shared passwords with other colleagues.

"Privacy and data protection are meaningless if they do not address the full spectrum of threats and if they are not enforced, and our research points to an urgent need to address this pervasive vulnerability in corporate data security programs," said Dr. Larry Ponemon, chairman and founder, Ponemom Institute.

What to do when a laptop is lost or stolen?

So, Murphy's Law has struck -- an employee finally lost a laptop. It's been on your mind for a while, given the facts and the ease of breaking in and uncovering sensitive unstructured information. You've been dreading it but figured it wouldn't happen to one of your employees. After all it's corporate policy not to store sensitive information anywhere but on a select few servers.

This is a predictable enterprise scenario I come across quite often. In fact, the formula is almost always the same: criminal mind + trusting users to do the right thing + minimal endpoint security = exposure of sensitive information. When a laptop is lost, there's a lot to be done in a short time, and it's best to err on the side of caution even if you believe nothing sensitive was stored on it.

What to do
Instead of pointing fingers and placing blame, it's best to focus on the important elements that help you stay focused on the business task at hand. Listed below are a few key steps to take if someone in your organization loses a laptop or has it stolen. These measures will help you respond rather than react and will get you back on the road to recovery, minimizing any future worries.

  1. Contact the local law enforcement agency where the property is thought to have been lost or stolen.
  2. Notify your compliance officer, marketing and PR managers, legal counsel, and any others with a vested interest so they can prepare to respond in their areas of responsibility, such as media inquiries and customer notification.
  3. Look at any recent backups of the system you may have in order to determine what is likely to have been on the machine when it was lost or stolen.
  4. Change any WEP or WPA/WPA2 pre-shared keys on your wireless network to keep the person who recovered it from accessing your network.
  5. Change the user's network, email, Web, database, or other application passwords to prevent any unauthorized system use and abuse.
  6. Change any other user or administrator passwords that may have been present on the operating system or related applications in case that information is recovered.
  7. Hope and pray for the best! It could very well be that the system wasn't fully breached, was reformatted and sold for cash, or may soon be returned.

Doing the right things
Once you get back on track after responding to the breach, it may be time to step back and assess how security breaches and overall information risk are managed in your organization. The most important thing to do is to see where you're vulnerable. Look at a sampling of laptops to see just how susceptible they are to information breach if they're lost or stolen. Pretend you're a bad guy who just came across a laptop. What can be done with the information stored on it, including word processor and spreadsheet files stored in the Windows Documents and Settings folder, any temporary directories, or even the desktop.

Furthermore, try to uncover passwords in areas that many people don't think about -- Windows .pwl files, protected storage elements, VPN client software, and more. I recommend Elcomsoft's Proactive System Password Recovery tool. Many people don't realize that all this information is stored and readily accessible once someone has their laptop.

Next, you need to update your existing security incident response plan or create a new one. Such a plan consists of the who, what, when, where and how steps outlining how breaches are handled. A solid incident response plan will have the following sections:

  • Introduction
  • Preparation
  • Detection
  • Containment
  • Investigation
  • Eradication
  • Recovery
  • Follow-up
  • Team member contact information
  • Testing procedures
  • Record keeping
  • Revisions

For more information on developing a solid incident response plan, check out my previous tip on the subject, as well as NIST's guide.

Finally, look into laptop security controls -- whole disk encryption and more -- which I outline here and can help enforce your policies, support your incident response plan, and manage information risks.

Looking ahead, remember that the problem of losing a mobile device that leads to information exposure is not limited to laptops. It also applies to smartphones, PDAs, and any other electronic device that stores even the least bit of enterprise information that can be easily recovered. Without a plan, suitable technical controls, and mobile device oversight, the lost laptop dilemma will continue to haunt you and your organization. Who has time – or the nerve – to deal with that?

LifeLock Identity Fraud Service Finds Skeptics

Two years ago, Todd Davis decided to put his Social Security number in the television commercials and print advertisements for LifeLock, the company he helped found. For a fee of about $10 a month, LifeLock offers what it calls a “proven solution” that prevents its customers from becoming victims of identity theft and fraud.

By putting those nine digits on public display, Mr. Davis was trying to show the world how confident he was in LifeLock’s service. And it worked. Today, he has just over one million customers. In January, Goldman Sachs led a $25 million round of financing for the company. Last week, Google’s chief financial officer joined its board.

But Mr. Davis’s stunt also amounted to a dare, and one man in Texas has already succeeded in getting a payday loan in his name.

Regulators and lawyers have the company in their sights, too. The state of Oklahoma accused LifeLock of selling insurance without proper certification. New York City has announced its intention to sue the company. Class-action lawyers have filed federal and state lawsuits, charging deceptive business practices and fraudulent advertising, among other things...more

Some people think GPS can be used to track a stolen unit. But most consumer units do not transmit their location. They are simply receivers. There are exceptions. But these are usually units sold to businesses, like trucking companies.

GadgetTrak, a tracking service, might help. You load the tracking program on your GPS unit. If it is stolen, you activate tracking through the Web site. If the unit is connected to a computer, it will transmit information. The computer must be hooked up to the Internet...more

Report puts 3G iPhone on store shelves by mid-June

Consumers holding out for the next-generation of Apple Inc.'s iPhone won't have to wait till the end of June to call one their own, according to a new report which places widespread availability closer to the middle of the month.

Citing a "reliable source" familiar with the matter, popular gadget blog Gizmodo is now throwing its weight behind the obvious, saying it's now a certainty that Apple will take the wraps off a so-called 3G iPhone during the start of its annual developers conference on June 9th (at Mosconi Convention Center in San Francisco, California).

More relevant, however, is the site's claim that Spaniards will be able to purchase the device during the grand opening of Telefonica's megastore in Spain a little over a week later on Wednesday, June 18th. As such, stateside availability is expected to be similar, if not preceding the Spanish launch.

Gizmodo cites the same unidentified source as saying that beginning with the arrival of a 3G model, the Apple handset will no longer be available at a fixed price point in some countries

"[Its] launch will also bring new sales policies, although these have not been completely specified yet," the report states. "This most probably means the new 3G iPhone will be integrated in the usual marketing systems of carriers, with point-based trade-ups, discounts for carrier switchers, and other service-based subvention packages."

In a recent press release, Apple said chief executive Steve Jobs along with other members of the company's management would use Jobs' opening keynote address at the June developers conference to showcase the Mac OS X Leopard and iPhone development platforms, but in traditional fashion abstained from alluding to any planned major product launches.

Nevertheless, confidence in the keynote serving as a launch pad for the next-gen iPhone saw a boost earlier this month when Apple stopped taking online orders for its existing iPhone models, leading to an almost immediate sellout of company's developers conference for the first time in history.

One in eight children victims of iPod theft

200x190.jpgOne in eight children aged between 11 and 16 has had a "hot product" such as an iPod stolen from them. One in three victims was using the item at the time.

The shocking figures come from research by the Design Council which highlight the increasing level of crime among youngsters.

It is claimed that "must-have" gadgets like iPods and the iPhone are driving the crimes with a third of 11-year-olds saying they carry gizmos worth over £200, half put the value of their technology at between £100 and £500.
The research by the Design Council on behalf of the Home Office involved 1,000 11-16 year-olds.

A spokesperson for the Design Council, said: “Unfortunately, while there's a demand for hot products there's also a risk that they will be the target of criminals. And young people are more likely to a victim of crime than adults."

BitTorrent blocking more common with US ISPs

Blocking of BitTorrent traffic is widespread among some ISPs in the US and Singapore, but not in Canada or any other country on the globe, says a new study released this week from German researchers. The study was conducted between March 18 and May 15 by the German-based Max Planck Institute for Software Systems, with assistance with more than 8,000 users worldwide. Together, they implemented a tool called Glasnost to test whether their BitTorrent traffic was being manipulated. Their results pinpointed Comcast and Cox as the leading culprits of torrent blocking in the US, though that may not come as a surprise to many of their customers. The survey was limited strictly to hosts whose BitTorrent transfers to the institute’s servers were blocked — or interrupted by RST packets generated by an ISP — as opposed to being throttled or rate-limited.

Interestingly, in spite of accusations of BitTorrent blocking recently filed with Canadian authorities against Bell Canada and other Canadian ISPs, the study found a total of only one blocked host out of 1,272 hosts measured in Canada. That compares with Malaysia, where one of the 64 measured hosts turned out to be blocked. None of the hosts measured in the UK were blocked, though, and no blocking appeared in Australia, France, Germany, India, the Ukraine, Israel, United Arab Emirates (UAR), China, Japan, South Korea, or dozens of other countries studied. In the US, however, 599 of the 2,714 measured hosts were blocked for BitTorrent transfers. The same held true for 26 of the 70 measured hosts in Singapore. All of the hosts observed to be blocking BitTorrent tracking did so in the upstream direction, while only a handful did so in downstream BitTorrent transfers.

Biarkan Packard Bell Memandu Anda

Firmware 2.0 hints suggest Apple might be working on a 3G iPhone

You'll never believe this, but it looks like Cupertino might be getting ready to drop a bomb this summer -- a 3G bomb, in fact! The latest beta release of firmware 2.0 for the iPhone has apparently revealed a preference screen that allows users of the new model to disable the 3G radio and fall back to GPRS / EDGE because the faster service "decreases battery life." Gotta pay to play, as they say. The ability to disable 3G service in favor of improved standby performance is a pretty common one in modern phones, so we're not surprised to see it here -- just a little disappointed that Apple hasn't incorporated enough fairy dust to magically make the problem go away...more

Court Finds TorrentSpy Liable for $110 Million

A federal judge court inflicted $110 million in penalties on shuttered BitTorrent tracker TorrentSpy.com, after the site defaulted on a court request to produce logs of its users’ activity.

The MPAA accused TorrentSpy of copyright infringement in early 2006.

The $110 million figure, one of the largest judgments ever entered for copyright infringement, was calculated by multiplying the site’s 3,669 “shown” infringements by $30,000, which is the maximum penalty available under certain conditions in the Copyright Act. U.S. District Court Judge Florence-Marie Cooper entered her ruling against the site and its parent company, Valence Media, for willfully and vicariously contributing to the infringement of copyrighted materials.

“This substantial money judgment sends a strong message about the illegality of these sites,” said MPAA chairman and CEO Dan Glickman. “The demise of TorrentSpy is a clear victory for the studios.”..more

Windows XP SP3 Is Not Bug-Free

With just a few days from its official release, the Windows XP Service Pack 3 is already receiving a large numer of post-instalation complaints.

Apparently, the up-date causes a series of problems, from random blue-screens to continuous reboots.

Jesper Johanson, a former program manager for security policy at Microsoft, who now runs a Windows blog, explained the situation in one of his recent blog posts:
"At this point, I want to clarify that the endless rebooting is not at all related to SP3 per se. The problem is that with some configurations, SP3 causes the computer to crash during boot, and Windows XP, by default, is set up to automatically reboot when it crashes. That is why you end up in the endless rebooting scenario."...more

APPLE TO BUY YAHOO?

A report from Scotland On Sunday mentioned that Apple and News Corp were considering bids to buy Yahoo and that Yahoo’s management would prefer to be rescued by Apple rather than Microsoft.

If Microsoft was to buy Yahoo, it would bring its “Search” market share from 4% up to… 17%. The issue is that the combination of both companies might not make their respective search algorithms better than Google’s, at least not anytime soon. The question is: how would a buyer add value to Yahoo?..more

Apple iTunes Getting New Movies Same Day as DVD

Brick and mortar stores could have sales stolen by Apple iTunes digital downloads

Although the vast majority of all sales of movies are done on DVD, likely at mass market locations such as Wal-Mart, there is a slowly growing population of those who are playing for digital downloads.

Such a phenomenon is becoming well established in the realm of music, where users of iTunes will pay 99 cents to download a song. Apple is now hoping to bring the same level of success it did to music over to movies.

Apple announced that new releases and catalog titles will be available on iTunes day-and-date with the DVD releases from 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Lionsgate, Image Entertainment and First Look Studios.

Movies purchased from iTunes can be viewed on an iPod with video, iPhone, Mac or PC or on a widescreen TV with Apple TV. New release movies will be priced at $14.99 and older catalog titles at $9.99. The iTunes Store current carries over 1,500 films at present.

Notable releases this week include American Gangster and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, which will join other recent movies Juno, Cloverfield, I Am Legend, There Will Be Blood and others.

“We’re thrilled to bring iTunes Store customers new films for purchase day-and-date with the DVD release,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of iTunes. “We think movie fans will love being able to buy their favorites from major and independent studios.”

Unlike Microsoft’s Xbox Live Marketplace service, which is allows only movie rentals, the iTunes Store presents movies for purchase as well as rental. Apple did not reveal any plans to offer high-definition movies for download, which is available on Microsoft’s service.
