Black Screens For Unauthorized Copies of Windows
"In a bid to deter people from using pirate versions of Windows XP, Microsoft is now updating its Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) tool to introduce a few uncomfortable niggles for users of pirated versions of Windows. These include replacing the desktop wallpaper with a black screen every 60 minutes, although you can still replace it with your wallpaper of choice in the intervening period. As well as this, copies of Windows deemed to not be genuine will also have a translucent watermark above the system tray, which Microsoft calls a 'persistent desktop notification.'"

Fire Damages Building at Apple's Cupertino HQ
A fire broke out in Apple's Cupertino headquarters last night, starting on the roof of a two-story building, and severely damaging it. Initial reports suggest that the three-alarm fire at Valley Green 6 started at or near an air conditioning unit, and was phoned in by workers on site. About 66 firefighters were on scene ultimately—they put the fire out in approximately half an hour. Currently there's no details about what Apple uses the particular building for, so the repercussions are unclear. But luckily it looks like no one was hurt. CBS5.com has some video of the aftermath.

T-Mobile To Make Cross Platform App Store Rival
While T-Mobile does have the official iPhone contract in a number of countries (including its home base of Germany) the network's USA division has revealed it is keen to create a comparative rival to the handset's game changing App Store (pictured below).
Speaking to moconews.comT-Mobile's Director of Mobile Applications and Partner Programmes Venetia Espinoza explained:
“T-Mobile is working with the industry to foster an open wireless services platform which will provide developers with the tools and information they need to make new, innovative experiences available to T-Mobile’s more than 31.5M customers. The devPartner Community site, which is in its alpha stage, is just a taste of what T-Mobile has in store and we encourage you to stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.”

Much like Apple's App Store model, T-Mobile will take a cut of all software applications and over the air downloads and installation are expected to be fundamental to its functionality. Interestingly - unlike Apple - T-Mobile's lofty ambition is to support the full range of manufacturers' handsets it sells on its network which could either prove appealing or daunting to potential programmers. Android? Yep, that will be covered too.
Personally speaking however I find it disappointing that a network has had to step up given the lack of progress in this area from major players such as Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, Motorola and HTC. Isn't it they who should be leading the charge...?

BAK2U – Lost? But Found!

BAK2U Pte Ltd is a leading Singapore start-up founded by Paddy Tan in May 2005. The company develops and provides mobile security solutions (patent-pending) for both consumers and corporate owners' gadgets including PDA phones, mobile phones, laptops, digital cameras, iPods, external portable hard drives to name a few. Its anti-theft software protects communication devices and sensitive information by the identification of thief via contact number, location, IP address, machine serial number and even video of the perpetrator. Till date, BAK2U is available worldwide and works in close collaborations with its major partners, AT&T and service provider.
ACE Editor chats with founder of BAK2u, Paddy Tan on his entrepreneurship journey.
ACE Editor (AE): Share with us more about yourself and the motivation behind starting a business.
Paddy: One of the biggest push factors was seeing how hard my parents worked as hawkers* (cooked food seller) when I was young. My parents start working from 3am to about 11pm daily, and I used to help them in the wee hours before going to school. They went through the hardship to ensure that both my younger brother and I were well fed and received ample opportunities for a good education that holds the key to have a better life than them.
At the age of 14, I came to realise my parents’ contributions to the family and I wanted to do my part as well. Starting my own business appears to be the avenue for me to manage my working hours and create the opportunity to provide a better life for my family. That became the ultimate driving force behind setting up my own business.
AE: How did you chance upon the business idea of gadgets protection software?

How to prevent your iPhone 3G from 'freezing'?
With the introduction of App Store into the iPhone 3G (2.0), like many users we downloaded a lot of freewares into our iPhones to test them out.
This is where 'freezing' of the iPhone starts to occur. And this is how the following steps can help for those on the move;
For programs that are no longer desirable, users can just press and hold the icons to remove them. The 'shaking' will start moving all the icons around with a little 'X' on the side. Press it and it will display a warning to delete the program.
After deletion, the best practice is to power off the iphone after deleting the program and wait for 1 minute or so before powering it up again. This will allow the OS to do a 'clean uninstallation' of the program and also to prevent any freezing from occurring.
Best method: Uninstall the programs via iTune. The safest and less frustrating process.

Apple kills NetShare: No more iPhone-as-modem
Within hours of Nullriver releasing its NetShare application through Apple's iTunes Store, Apple apparently put the kabosh on the application, which allows users to turn the iPhone into a modem. Users can, of course, still use the application on a jailbroken iPhone, if they can find it. Nullriver doesn't have the application available for download from its website...more

Toyota Develops Segway-Like Transporter
Still, looking at Toyota's new Winglet "personal transport assistance robots," it's hard not to concur with Jalopnik's assessment that the devices have borrowed more than a few notes from the scooter company. Hopefully they won't be plagued by the same software glitch..more
Probably I'm being a touch too cynical here, but generally when companies borrow design cues, they come from highly successful products. Sure the Segway has managed to get something of a foothold among certain groups, but the product is rarely considered much more than a niche device, despite the highly successful viral marketing campaign that proceeded it.
