[BAK2u] SoftGen to distribute device tracking software

The distributor gains access to the full range of Bak2u device products to track phones and other mobility devices

Device tracking software supplier, Antitheft.net.au, has signed on SoftGen as its sole Australian distributor.

Under the new arrangement, SoftGen will have access to the full range of tracking software products for iPods, desktop PCs and Macs, notebooks, mobile phones and PDAs.

The Bak2u tracking offerings notify users of the location of their mobile device and who is using it if it is lost or stolen. The mobile phone product does this via text message alerts to another chosen phone number and can be used to wipe information remotely. The GadgetTrak device tracker, meanwhile, is sold on a subscription model and accessed by users over the Internet via GadgetTrak’s servers. Both products will be sold locally under the Bak2u brand.

Antitheft.net.au director, Jason Rogers, said it had been looking to expand sales of the tracking products in Australia across retail, reseller and online channels. Antitheft.net.au has been around for three years and is the agent for Bak2u and GadgetTrak across A/NZ and South East Asia. With rising mobile device use, he claimed there was an increased need for extra security measures. “We started getting interest from the retail outlets and decided to look for a partner. SoftGen fitted with where we are going and gives us access to the proper channels,” Rogers said.

With a broadening range of products, Rogers said SoftGen would now be its primary route to Australia’s consumer and corporate markets. The company will, however, also look at product bundling opportunities with OEMs.

SoftGen general manager, Guy Coles, said the Bak2u offerings fit well with its push into mobility and security markets. The distributor is in discussions with telco operators and dealers to on-sell the Bak2u mobile phone tracking software with handsets.

Coles said SoftGen planned to push the device tracking software for storage devices, PCs and Macs, through its traditional IT reseller channel.

He said the tracking software could be something resellers provided as a value-add service.

“When your phone or BlackBerry is stolen, it is the information stored on the SIM or device that is of most value,” Coles said. “These tracking products would suit corporates with Sarbanes-Oxley requirements who have reporting obligations."

[BAK2u] Testimonial - Edmund Goo, Singapore

'I've bought my Bak2u software in May 2007, installed to my PDA phone but recently I've purchased a new mobile phone for my son with a new number. His old phone number which I assigned to receive sms in the event of lost of my PDA phone, a sms will be sent to him notifying me the person whom took my PDA phone.

I tried to re-assign my son new mobile number but failed.

I call "Bak2u" for assistance & get an immediate reply from the sales team. The technical team also called me the next working day to assist me in the re-installation of the "Bak2u" software & my problem was solved.

I am very grateful & satisfied with the service of "Bak2u".'

[BAK2u] Testimonial - Clive, Hong Kong

In March 2008, I lost one of my favourite ppc phones (O2 Atom) in a taxi to HK station catching a train to airport. I was so depressed even I got a receipt with taxi license plate. Then I knew I lost it forever as it's off after 10 minutes while I kept calling my own phone...

I did not know anything like who got my mobile, and what happened on all the valuable info I had in my phone!

After getting the substitute one (LG KS20), I still worried about losing this one again. Luckily, I noticed there was software called "PhoneBAK" from a magazine. I was impressed on how this software can do, esp. hard resetting the mobile after sending SMS to assigned parties.

Recently, I bought a new HTC Touch Pro and I need to get a new copy of PhoneBAK. BAK2u get PhoneBAK even more perfect - including "Erase memory card" feature. I love this feature, as I always put some business materials in the card for pushing emails. Then I have no worries to lose any business sensitive info again. Of course I don't want to lose my mobile again, but PhoneBAK gives me a solid insurance :)

In summary, PhoneBAK is not only security software, but it's extremely user-friendly, and BAK2u is such a considerate company with lots of user-care features like locking the software and not showing it in the "Add/Remove Program" screen!

Looking forward to more excellent software from BAK2u,

Clive, Hong Kong

Why iPhone developers should defect to Android

Quite a bit has been made lately over Apple's treatment of developers who want to create apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The company has consistently played games with developers by keeping them in the dark and ensuring that each time an app is rejected they're given as little information as possible.

Of course, this doesn't come as a surprise to those of us who have followed Apple all these years. The company has always been suspect of third-party developers and has consistently failed to do the right thing even when it's faced with a PR firestorm. After all, if the mainstream doesn't pay attention, who cares?

But it's that kind of mentality that could get Apple into trouble. Sure, it worked fine for the company with Mac OS X and it has every right in the world to stop apps from getting into its store if they're undesirable, but that doesn't stop the onslaught of complaints that Apple is acting in a way that's more than a little "wrong."

Let's see if I can capture the main points. First, Apple announced that the first iPhone wouldn't have third-party apps. It took almost a year for the company to come around and finally let third-party developers create apps for its follow-up. But once that happened, all hell broke loose.

First, developers repeatedly made claims that Apple's excessive restrictions were out-of-hand, only to be followed once the App Store launched with a few notable removals from the store, including Nullriver's NetShare and Box Office...more

RIM plans to step up business in Asia

Research in Motion will add new carriers in fast-growing emerging markets, and does not yet see an adverse impact from a widening global financial crisis, a Reuters report said.

The Reuters report further quoted RIM co-chief executive Jim Balsillie saying that RIM is betting that new product launches will fuel growth for the rest of the year and beyond, despite a slowdown in the US economy, and is looking at setting up manufacturing and logistics operations in India.

"No matter how much economic challenge there is, how many people do you know that have given up their mobile?" Balsillie said at the launch of the BlackBerry Bold smartphone in India's financial hub.

"But there's clearly got to be a point where there is an impact. Macro-economic factors have gotten all the more turbulent in the last week, and maybe it will come to that tipping point," he said, declining to say if the company stood by its guidance for the second quarter and for the rest of the year...more

Is Android Google's Ticket into the Enterprise?

Google Inc.'s Android project could be the start of a much larger enterprise strategy, according to one industry analyst. But before the search engine giant can threaten Microsoft's enterprise supremacy, most observers of wireless industry efforts agree that the company's open source OS platform will need to regain support from its development community.

With the first Android-based phone -- the HTC Dream -- rumored to be joining the crowded smartphone market later this year, whether or not enterprise users will take notice remains to be seen. But according to Rob Enderle, principal analyst at The Enderle Group, big business is exactly the target Google hopes to attract.

"The Android platform is part of Google's strategy to eventually move against Microsoft in the enterprise," Enderle said. "Google is coming in with the phone because it's not a platform that Microsoft currently controls and no vendor has reached a monopoly in the mobile space yet."

Enderle said the smartphone is trending to be the next laptop computer and an integral part of enterprise communication. "Just like Microsoft rode the change from the mainframe to the PC into the enterprise, Google will look to do the same with the smartphone," he added.

But other mobile industry watchers, like Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney, disagreed with Enderle's theory that the Mountain View, Calif.-based tech giant has its sights focused on large organizations..more

Apple recalls iPhone 3G power adapter

Apple is recalling USB power adapters that shipped as part of the iPhone 3G package in the U.S., Japan, Canada, Mexico, and numerous Latin American countries. Apple customers who purchased the phone can exchange the adapter via web order or simply by visiting Apple stores beginning October 10.

Apple today indicated a design flaw in its “ultracompact” USB power adapters supplied with the iPhone 3G or as a standalone accessory, which can cause the prongs to break off and remain in the power outlet, creating the risk of electric shock. The company said that it has received reports of “detached” prongs but no injuries.

The affected power adapters were exclusively sold in the U.S., Japan, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Peru, Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica and Panama. The company recommends customers in these countries to stop using their adapters “immediately” until they exchange them for a new, redesigned adapter. In the meantime, the company suggests users to charge their iPhone 3G through the USB cable that connects to a PC, by using a standard-sized Apple USB Power Adapter (with fold up prongs) or by using a third party adapter designed to work with the iPhone, such as a car charger.

Apple said that replacement adapters will be available beginning on October 10. Customers who received their adapter as part of the iPhone 3G or through a separate accessory purchase can get their replacement adapters through Apple retail stores or through web order. According to Apple, adapters ordered via Internet wills hip within three weeks of the order, starting on October 10.

Replacement USB power adapters are marked with a green dot at the bottom.

Apple decided to bypass the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission with this recall and did not provide any information how many products are affected. However, with a confirmed shipment of more than 1 million iPhones 3Gs during the device’s launch weekend of June 9, as well as Q3 (July-September) shipment estimates of 4 to 8 million, units it is safe to assume that Apple will have to replace several million USB power adapters in the 14 countries the unit was sold.

Google’s $199 phone to compete with the iPhone

The price of the new Google (GOOG) smart phone would put the device head-to-head with Apple’s $199 iPhone (AAPL). The Google phone, which features a touchscreen and is made by Taiwanese manufacturer HTC, faces some stiff competition. The iPhone 3G has generated significant interest among consumers for redefining touch-screen technology, popularizing mobile applications and significantly improving Web navigation on cell phones.

T-Mobile (DT), the first carrier that will run Google’s Android mobile software, will show off the new phone to analysts and reporters on Tuesday in Manhattan. It is expected to hit stores later this fall.

Representatives from Google, HTC and T-Mobile would not comment on the Journal’s report.

Google unveiled features of the Android operating system on an unidentified black HTC handset at a developers conference in London on Wednesday.

The HTC phone is just the first of many Google-powered phones, according to the search giant. For Google to reach its ultimate goal - driving mobile Internet use and, in turn, ads - it will need to get multiple devices in the hands of mainstream consumers. The price will also need to be right, given that companies like Palm and Samsung already offer entry-level smartphones for $100.

Stolen laptop - Personal details of former directors

A laptop computer containing personal details of 385 former directors of insolvent companies has been stolen, the Insolvency Service has said.

It has written to those it believes may have been affected by the theft of equipment from its Manchester offices.

One of four laptops stolen from the government agency contained information on the directors from 122 firms.

This loss is the latest in a long line of cases where confidential information has been lost or stolen.

Greater Manchester Police are investigating the burglary, which happened on 28 August.

Those affected by the theft include former company directors, insolvency practitioners and people who were named in documents, including creditors, complainants, investors and employees.

'Star Wars' fans flock to video game launch

In four hours, the latest--and maybe greatest--Star Wars game, The Force Unleashed, will go on sale.

No one knows if the game will be a best-seller, but if you judged by the energy at the Best Buy in this city's Mission District on Monday night, where the game's official launch event is being held, it's got a bright future.

There is a special guest scheduled to speak in about 15 minutes, and by now, it's no secret that it will be George Lucas himself.

For now, however, fans of the game--and hired hands--are milling around the Best Buy here in all kind of Star Wars costumes, and every now and then I hear the easily recognized beep bleep bloop sound of R2-D2..more

Welcome to the BlackBerry Lifestyle

In a further sign that BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion (RIM) sees the vast consumer market as key to its future success in the mobile space, Jim Balsillie,, RIM's co-CEO, touted the "BlackBerry lifestyle" in his keynote speech last week at the CTIA Wireless IT and Entertainment event in San Francisco, barely addressing enterprise-specific products at all.

Balsillie was referring to the company's strategy to build on its current crop of "lifestyle" applications and services, like Web mail, personal calendars, instant messaging (IM) programs, mobile social networking apps and more, which are largely aimed at its consumer users--though many could potentially be used for business purposes as well.

The CTIA event is for both businesspeople and consumers, but Balsillie spent less than five minutes of his 35-minute speech on enterprise-related products and services. In fact, the only two enterprise-specific products Balsillie touched upon were RIM's BlackBerry Mobile Voice System (MVS), which can merge traditional corporate desk phones and cellular phones; and the company's Mobile Data System (MDS), which is designed to simplify the mobile application development and deployment process for organizations...more

Google bends to Chrome privacy criticism

Reacting to criticism that its new Chrome browser was essentially acting as a keylogger, potentially recording users' every keystroke, Google Inc. yesterday said it would render anonymous the data it collects from the browser within 24 hours.

A privacy expert said the change's impact couldn't be gauged without knowing exactly how Google will "anonymize" the data it records as users type in Chrome's "OmniBox," the name given to the browser's combination address bar-search bar.

Google has taken heat over the "Google Suggest" feature used within OmniBox since it launched Chrome last week. The Suggest feature automatically lists related search queries and popular Web destinations based on the text typed into the OmniBox. Suggest works by logging users' keystrokes -- not just in the OmniBox, but since late last month in Google's primary search field -- and offering the most likely sites or searches based on a blend of popularity and the search company's own algorithms..more

Nokia loses ground in smartphone market

Nokia’s share of the world smartphone market shrank three points in Q2, despite market growth of nearly 16%, says Gartner.

Nokia sold 15.3 million high-end phones, or 47.5% of all smart devices shipped, well ahead of its nearest rival BlackBerry, with a 17.4% share.

Global sales grew to 32.2 million units, up from 27.9 million units in the same period last year. Smartphones accounted for 11% of all mobiles sold, the same share as last year.

Last week Nokia warned that its share of the total handset market in Q3 would shrink because of aggressive price-cutting by competitors.

Gartner said although sales were up 22% in the first half of the year, shipments had slowed because of the weaker global economy.

“The current economic environment continues to negatively impact the market, limiting consumer spending and replacement purchases in general,” said Gartner principal analyst Roberta Cozza.

She said the introduction of enhanced phones based on proprietary operating systems had also crimped smartphone demand. Smartphone sales in Asia-Pacific and Japan actually fell 4.8% and 24% respectively as a result.

The launch of new high-end phones in Q3, including the 3G iPhone, would drive higher growth in the quarter, Cozza predicted.

North America accounted for almost 25% of the global smartphone sales to end users, up 78.7% over last year. EMEA sales grew 21% for the quarter, Gartner said.

Google takes Web browser rivalry to whole new level

Google has introduced a new Web browser, called Chrome, aimed at wresting dominance of the browser market from Microsoft's Internet Explorer. The move takes the Google-Microsoft rivalry to a whole new level. If Google succeeds, it will be a big deal, with major ramifications for the future of the Web.

But just how good is Chrome? How does it differ from IE and from less popular, but still important, browsers like Mozilla's Firefox and Apple's Safari?

I've been testing Chrome for about a week, trying out all its features and using it side by side with Microsoft's latest iteration of IE, which came out just last week...more

Google attracts a gaggle with new Chrome browser

Google once again is the talk of the Web with this week's release of its very own Web browser, Chrome.

In just one day, it captured 1 percent of the increasingly crowded global Web browser market, according to research company Net Applications.

I shouldn't be surprised.

This is the company, after all, that has been encroaching on Microsoft's territory for months with a series of Web-based applications reminiscent of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Outlook.

Now, with Chrome, Google has another chance to take a crack at the software giant.

It has been only a few days since Microsoft, the browser market's entrenched leader with 72 percent of users worldwide, released an updated test version of Internet Explorer 8. The company is counting on IE 8 to win back some of the users it has lost lately to rival browsers, such as Firefox and Apple's Safari.

With the release of Chrome, however, nobody seems to care about IE 8 anymore.

Web users in more than 100 countries started downloading Chrome on Tuesday. You can get it free at www.google.com/chrome.

For now, only those with computers running Microsoft Windows can use Chrome. But Google says versions for Apple and Linux operating systems are on the way soon....more

How to save your iPhone battery power?

We all know that with a device like iPhone 3G that can do almost everything from playing your favourite MP3 songs, watching a movie to checking email wirelessly.... the battery life is not going to last the entire day for any mobile workers.

Here are some tips to get you going -

1. Let there be 'light'!
Under the program Settings, tune it down the brightness to conserve as much energy as possible. Setting it to maximum is just going to drain it out faster. Set it to a comfortable brightness and set it to Auto 'ON' too so that the system can give the best optimized brightness.

2. Turn off the WiFi and Bluetooth.
If you are not using them for emails, surfing or phone conversation turn them off as all these drain the juice out very fast. Make it a habit to off the WiFi after checking your email

3. Check e-mail less.
It takes a lot of juice to get online, download the emails specially those with attachments.

4. Auto lock it!
This will help the device to go into sleeping mode when the minute you set is up. Helps save a lot of battery juice when the display dont go running or any accidental activating of programs.

5. Turn off iTune equalizer
Yes it drains the battery life very fast when the tempo goes higher or lower when the program accomodate to different beats of the songs.

6. Get a backup battery
What's life to owning an iPhone but unable to use its features? Get a backup battery and charge it whenever it is low on juice. (AA Battery & Lithium-ion)

Google Vs Mozilla

“It should come as no real surprise that Google has done something here — their business is the web, and they’ve got clear opinions on how things should be, and smart people thinking about how to make things better. Chrome will be a browser optimized for the things that they see as important, and it’ll be interesting to see how it evolves.”

Mozilla's Europe president, Tristan Nitot also chimed in during an interview with PCPro, stating that they don't view this as a direct attack on Firefox, even if it did catch them by surprise. "I'll take another example: just before Microsoft launched Vista, it invited us [to work with it] so that Firefox works better on Windows Vista. Because for it, Firefox being a top-tier application that was very successful - we now have 200 million users around the world - it could not afford to have Firefox run slowly on Vista. Therefore, it helped us improve Firefox for Vista. That's just the same for Google. It wants Firefox to perform well with its applications, that's for sure. Indeed, it even wants IE to perform well with Gmail and the rest. It's just that it has very limited control over this. That's why Google's been frustrated and it is launching this Chrome browser."
