Top 10 iPhone Complaints: Consumers Most Interested in Basic Phone Functions
It’s been 16 months since the original iPhone was released. With its sleek design and impressive gadgetry the device has been a consumer hit and a commercial success — in spite of its high price tag and mandatory two-year wireless commitment with AT&T. As the honeymoon comes to an end, even enthusiasts are groaning over what some critics call an apparent lack of detail and disclosure in a rushed to market device. Scouring the web, and streets, malls and restaurants here in Los Angeles we’ve been able to come up with the top 10 iPhone complaints. Some of which you may have known and others that might surprise you.
Most iPhone users appear to be genuinely happy with their phone for the most part. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement especially as it relates to functions users expect from their cell phone: connectivity, battery time, chatting/texting and replacement programs.
The number one iPhone complaint among current users is the amount of dropped calls and poor reception. Neither AT&T nor Apple are taking responsibility or pointing the finger. Many iPhone users also expressed their discontent with the battery life and begrudged the fact that it’s not removable. Some of the applications and features that the phone uses drain the battery quickly. Last September, Apple issued its iPhone 2.1 software update aimed at reducing the amount of dropped calls and improving battery life...more

Security Flaw Is Revealed in T-Mobile’s Google Phone
Just days after the T-Mobile G1 smartphone went on the market, a group of security researchers have found what they call a serious flaw in the Android software from Google that runs it.
One of the researchers, Charles A. Miller, notified Google of the flaw this week and said he was publicizing it now because he believed that cellphone users were not generally aware that increasingly sophisticated smartphones faced the same threats that plague Internet-connected personal computers.
Mr. Miller, a former National Security Agency computer security specialist, said the flaw could be exploited by an attacker who might trick a G1 user into visiting a booby-trapped Web site...moreat 9:37 AM

Woman in jail over virtual murder
A woman has been arrested in Japan after she allegedly killed her virtual husband in a popular video game.
The 43-year-old was reportedly furious at finding herself suddenly divorced in the online game Maplestory.
Police say she illegally accessed log-in details of the man playing her husband, and killed off his character.
The woman, a piano teacher, is in jail in Sapporo waiting to learn if she faces charges of illegally accessing a computer and manipulating data.
She was arrested on Wednesday and taken 620 miles (1,000 km) from her home in southern Miyazaki to Sapporo - where her "husband", a 33-year-old office worker lives.
If charged with the offences, and convicted, she faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000..more

India launches first moon mission
India blasted into the international space race Wednesday with the successful launch of an ambitious two-year mission to study the moon's landscape.

The unmanned lunar orbiter Chandrayaan-1, or "moon craft" in ancient Sanskrit, launched at 6:20 a.m. (8:50 p.m. ET) from the Sriharikota space center in southern India.
The mission seeks high-resolution imaging of the moon's surface, especially the permanently shadowed polar regions, according to the Indian Space Research Organization. It will also search for evidence of water or ice and attempt to identify the chemical breakdown of certain lunar rocks, the group said.
Despite the numerous missions to the moon over the past 50 years, "we really don't have a good map," said Miles O'Brien, CNN chief technology and environment correspondent. "The goal is to come up with a very intricate, three-dimensional map of the moon."
The Chandrayaan-1 is carrying payloads from the United States, European Union countries Germany, Britain, Sweden and Bulgaria, and India plans to share the data from the mission with other programs, including NASA...moreat 8:49 PM
T-Mobile sold first cells with Google Android
Christopher Laddise of San Francisco on Tuesday became the very first private owner of a T-Mobile G1, unwrapping the first smartphone running Google’s open-source Android software platform to wild applause at a special pre-launch event in the City by the Bay.T-Mobile, headquartered in Bellevue, Wash., will officially launch the G1 at its retail stores in 95 cities across the United States Wednesday, many of which will open early at 8 a.m. for the release of the $179 handset, and as many as 1.5 million existing T-Mobile customers have reportedly pre-ordered the devices. But for one night only, a couple hundred customers who lined up outside the telecom provider’s store at Market and 3rd streets in downtown San Francisco had the 3G-enabled smartphone all to themselves.

The T-Mobile G1 is available with a two-year voice and data agreement. Support for Web-based services from Mountain View, Calif.-based Google includes popular apps like Gmail and Google Maps, and the G1’s full HTML Web browser is already winning rave reviews. In addition to T-Mobile’s 3G network, the G1 has built-in support for the telecom’s Edge network, as well as WiFi and GPS. The new smartphone, 4.6 inches by 0.6 inches and weighing 5.6 ounces, has a 3.2-inch HVGA touchscreen but also sports a QWERTY keyboard, unlike the iPhone. It featurs a 3.2 megapixel camera and a microSD card slot.

Motorola Joins Google Android Craze
Just days before T-Mobile is set to officially start offering the Google Android-based G1, Motorola is getting in on the Android craze, discussing plans to have a smartphone based on the open-source Linux operating system by the middle of next year.
Citing Motorola insiders, BusinessWeek.com said Motorola's engineers are working on an Android handset geared toward users of social networking tools like MySpace and Facebook. The device will let users update and manage their social networking sites from the device, a feature that has become popular on handsets.
Motorola's Android device is expected to feature a touch screen similar to the Apple iPhone, T-Mobile G1 or the recently announced BlackBerry Storm from Research In Motion. Motorola's yet-to-be-named Android device is also expected to feature a G1-style physical slide-out QWERTY keyboard.
While Motorola has declined to specify its plans, it issued a statement saying, "We're excited about the innovation possibilities on Android and look forward to delivering great products in partnership with Google," BusinessWeek.com reported, indicating that Motorola has been showing wireless carriers spec sheets and images of the device, which is expected to hit the U.S. market in the second quarter of 2009..more

A New Line From Apple: The Metal MacBook
Steven P. Jobs, Apple’s chief executive, announced a new line of Apple laptop computers on Tuesday that he said were made with a new manufacturing process.
Mr. Jobs introduced new versions of the company’s MacBook Pro and MacBook portable computers that are carved from 2.5-pound blocks of aluminum.
He said that the manufacturing process would allow Apple to build more rigid and reliable products.
“We end with this remarkably precise part that now only weighs a quarter of a pound,” said Jonathan Ive, Apple’s senior vice president for design.
Ever the showman, Mr. Jobs gave his audience of about 100 reporters, analysts and bloggers in a small auditorium on Apple’s campus a tutorial on manufacturing and industrial design. At one point, he passed more than a dozen finished palm-rest frames through the audience.
“It’s not only incredibly light but it’s very, very strong,” he said. “We’ve been working superhard to build unibody enclosures for some new notebooks.”
Using blocks of aluminum as the starting point for laptop cases resolved much of the speculation among Apple enthusiasts surrounding the term “brick.”
Many of them had thought the term described an entirely new product.
During an interview after his news conference, Mr. Jobs hinted that the company would have other significant product announcements soon. In July, the company’s chief financial officer said the company would shift its business model toward lower-profit-margin products in the future.
Because Apple did not announce products with significantly lower prices, speculation is still centered on products in new categories. “This is only part of the story,” Mr. Jobs said, referring to Tuesday’s announcements.
Mr. Jobs deflected questions both on the company’s financial state, saying that it would report its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings next week, and on his health. He displayed a slide showing that his blood pressure was 110 over 70, adding that questions about his health would cause his blood pressure to rise.
Since appearing gaunt and pale at a previous Apple introduction earlier this year, Mr. Jobs’s health has been the subject of intense interest. The company and Mr. Jobs have responded by saying that he has not had a recurrence of pancreatic cancer, which he battled four years ago.
Mr. Jobs looked thin Tuesday, but otherwise healthy and energetic.
Apple’s challenge, industry analysts said, remains the company’s ability to defy gravity if consumers begin to spend less on electronics.
Apple has usually been considered uniquely positioned to weather the impending crisis because its highly designed products appeal to an affluent consumer less likely to be affected by an economic downturn. But unintentionally, the company may have another advantage. A delay in refreshing its laptop product line created pent-up demand for its computers.
Apple says its computers account for 17.6 percent of the American retail market by volume and 31.3 percent by revenue.
A strong product introduction during the current quarter seems to be likely, according to a number of analysts.
On Monday, A. M. Sacconaghi, a securities analyst with Sanford C. Bernstein & Company, upgraded Apple’s stock and predicted it would outperform the market.
“Apple’s short-term financials are likely to remain relatively healthy despite economic weakness,” he said.
On Tuesday, shares of Apple rose more than $5 before falling, to end regular trading down $6.18 at $104.08. The shares were rising slightly in after-hours trading.
Despite strong retail sales, the company’s stock had been hit hard by the broader market sell-off. Apple shares dropped to as low as $88.74 last week, from $189.96 in May.
The company displayed an entry level $1,999 MacBook Pro model that comes with a glass touchpad to support a new set of finger gestures to control the computer, a 15.4-inch LED backlighted display and a range of other new features.
Apple also plans to sell a 13-inch version based on its standard MacBook line, starting at $1,299...moreAnti-theft software for Mac

Software blocks car phone users
A safety device which prevents drivers using mobile phones by automatically intercepting calls and text messages when they are moving has been unveiled.
The software tells callers the person they are trying to reach is driving and asks them to leave a message.
Canadian firm Aegis Mobility hopes its system will become available via a monthly subscription fee.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) says drivers are four times as likely to crash using a phone.
Phone fine
The DriveAssist system can also tell callers where the person they are trying to reach is located by using satellite navigation technology.
Motorists using mobile phones caused 25 fatal, 64 serious and 259 slight accidents in 2007, according to the Department for Transport.
It has been illegal to use a mobile phone while driving since December 2003 - with offenders facing a £60 on-the-spot fine and three points on their licence..more

Pre-sale orders for Android phone take off
U.S. service provider T-Mobile reportedly has been swamped with 1.5 million pre-sale orders for Google's G1 Android phone, industry observers say.
Neither Google nor T-Mobile would not confirm the figure, which was reported first on Motley Fool, ChannelWeb reported Monday. But ChannelWeb said the G1 pre-sale orders are three times the number of phones T-Mobile originally ordered from Taiwanese manufacturer HTC.
The official launch for the phone is Oct. 22. But preference has been established for current T-Mobile subscribers.
"Because of overwhelming demand, we're setting aside even more T-Mobile G1 phones as a special thanks to you, our loyal T-Mobile customers," a statement on T-Mobile's Web said.
"Supplies are limited, so this is your chance to order yours today before it hits the streets and guarantee you don't go without," the statement said.
T-Mobile said orders phones will be delivered around Nov. 10 for orders made before Oct. 21.
Google was involved in designing the Android operating system that powers the phone.

YouTube to offer full-length TV shows
YouTube said Friday it is adding full-length television shows to the menu at its globally popular website famous for snack-sized video snippets.
Episodes of classic television programs including "Star Trek," "MacGyver" and "Beverly Hills 90210" will be available in a "theater view" format unveiled at YouTube earlier this week.

Apple Laptops May Be Affected by Nvidia Chip Flaw
Apple Inc. became the latest computer maker to disclose that some of its laptop computers may be affected by a flaw associated with Nvidia Corp. chips.
The problem, previously acknowledged by Hewlett-Packard Co. and Dell Inc., causes problems such as distorted or scrambled video on the computer screen or no video at all, Apple said in a notice to consumers on its Web site.
Nvidia disclosed the problem in July, and the next month set a $196 million reserve to cover costs associated with addressing the problem. It has declined to specify which models of its chips are affected.
But Apple's notice, reported by Web sites that include Gizmodo, identifies a specific Nvidia chip that manages graphics in laptops. The notice says that when Nvidia publicly disclosed the problem in July it "assured Apple that Mac computers with these graphics processors were not affected." But after an investigation led by Apple, the computer maker said it determined that some MacBook Pro models with the GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor may be affected, Apple said in the notice...more

Verizon Wireless Plans to Charge Companies Sending Text Messages
Verizon Wireless this week told companies that send out text messages that starting Nov. 1 it will impose a fee of 3 cents for each message it delivers to the phones of its subscribers.
That fee is in addition to the fee of as much as 20 cents that those subscribers pay Verizon to receive the same message.
Text messages have become a popular way for companies to send bits of information to customers — sports scores, flight delays, bank balances or the latest updates from a social network.
The charge by Verizon Wireless, the nation’s second-largest cellphone service provider after AT&T, may prompt companies that have been working to tap into the texting boom to rethink their strategies. Many may simply stop sending messages to Verizon customers.
Steve Livingston, the director of marketing for mBlox, which processes text messages for companies including News Corporation’s MySpace social network and The New York Times, said the volume of messages it handles could fall by more than half...more

Blackberry Storm gets official, Vodafone and Verizon split the deal
The Blackberry Storm is the first touchscreen device by BlackBerry. It's got a spanking new user interface, which as it seems is fluid enough to compete the Apple iPhone with an ease. We already showed you the first official images of the device and its user interface and we even topped that with a Vodafone commercial video yesterday. Now that the Blackberry Storm is finally announced and the specs are all clear, it turns out that it doesn't pack Wi-Fi functionality as rumored. The Blackberry Storm 9500 will be sold through Vodafone networks and will be free on monthly plans of 35 GBP and up with an 18-month contract. The Blackberry Storm 9530 is the variant of the handset that will be sold in North America. Along with the quad-band GSM and 2100Mhz UMTS support that the 9500 model has, it will also offer CDMA2000 1xEV-DO support.
After tons of info leaked already, the Blackberry Storm finally got the official treatment. It will be sold exclusively by Vodafone in Europe and Verizon Wireless in the US. Telius in Canada will also be pushing the device to local customers.

Analysts: Spin-off puts AMD back in the fight with Intel
By splitting off its manufacturing operations into a separate company, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. could be on track to become the nimble, innovative company that once had Intel Corp. on the run.
AMD this morning announced plans to spin off its manufacturing operations into a separate company. With this dramatic turn, struggling AMD not only rids itself of the financial burden of running fabrication plants, it gains a hefty influx of cash from its partner in the deal, Advanced Technology Investment Co. (ATIC).
"I don't think this will give us a whole new AMD, but the industry will be dealing with an AMD that's a good deal more nimble because they won't be dealing with the same financial burdens or dealing with the fab plants," said Dean McCarron, president of Mercury Research in Cave Creek, Ariz. "Because this lowers the break-even point for AMD, it gives them staying power in the market and will help them focus on design and sales again."..more

Amazon's Kindle 2 leaked
After rumors surfaced on the Web a few months back that a new Kindle might be on the way, Amazon.com did its best to shoot them down, saying a new Kindle was not coming this year. Well, Boy Genius Report has gotten ahold of some photos that appear to be the Kindle 2, so we're curious what Amazon has to say now.
From the looks of the new device, Amazon has tried to address some of the criticisms of the Kindle, most of which revolve around its somewhat homely design and a few poorly placed buttons. The shape has been modified to make the new Kindle more attractive, but it appears Amazon is sticking with the same off-white color scheme--for better or worse..more

Setback for Nokia music service
Nokia faces a setback at the global launch of its music service in the UK this month because the country’s big four mobile operators do not plan to sell it.
Vodafone, O2 , Orange and T-Mobile are not expecting to use their high street stores to offer Nokia’s handsets featuring its unlimited music download service in the run-up to Christmas.
That would be a setback for Nokia, the biggest mobile handset maker, which is beginning an ambitious strategy of putting services such as music on to phones. It also underlines tensions between Nokia and the operators.
Nokia’s Comes With Music service had a global launch party in London on Thursday.
Two Nokia handsets featuring the service, which offers consumers the ability to download as much music as they want over a 12 or 18 month subscription period, go on sale on October 16 in the UK.
However, Nokia’s long-awaited 5800 mobile, its first touchscreen smartphone, is not one of the two launch models for the service because it will not go on sale in the UK until next year.
The UK is the only market where the Comes With Music service will be available this year. It will expand into continental Europe, Asia and the US next year.
In the short term, Nokia is likely to have to rely on Carphone Warehouse, the mobile phone retailer, to be the UK distribution channel for its Comes With Music-enabled handsets. Nokia will also use its London shop and website.
The two Nokia handsets featuring the service that go on sale in the UK with Carphone this month are the 5310 and the N95.
Priced at £130 ($229), the 5310 will be available on pay-as-you-go deals, and Carphone is the exclusive UK distribution channel for the handset this year.
The N95 will be tied to monthly contracts with the operators, although Nokia said Carphone had not yet provided pricing details.
The cost of the contracts will be partly determined by Carphone’s commercial arrangements with the operators for subsidising handsets. Many mobiles tied to monthly contracts are given free to consumers.
It remains unclear how many operators will agree to provide network coverage for the Comes With Music-enabled 5310 and N95 from October 16.
Nokia said: “We are optimistic we will have several operators on board by the end of the year.”
The operators all declined to comment.

Studios Sue to Bar a DVD Copying Program
Six major movie studios sued RealNetworks, the Seattle-based digital media company, on Tuesday over its new $30 software program that allows people to make digital copies of their DVDs.
As the opening warning on every DVD indicates, Hollywood has bitterly opposed such copying. The studios have argued that it threatens their emerging business of digital downloads and can motivate buyers to rent, copy and return DVDs instead of buying them.
RealNetworks, the company behind RealPlayer software and the Rhapsody music subscription service, said RealDVD gives users the freedom to do things like make backup copies of favorite discs or take movies along on a laptop while traveling. It has argued that RealDVD is now legal because of a favorable decision last year in a case against Kaleidescape, a Silicon Valley-based manufacturer of high-end media servers.
RealNetworks also said that RealDVD conforms to Hollywood’s rules on DVD protection by encrypting the digital copies, which prevents unlawful online file sharing...more
