How to sync BlackBerry and Google Calendar?

Synchronization is probably the most requested feature for Google Calendar and Google has finally done something about it. It's not quite what you would've expected, but it's still a promising start. Google Sync is an application that lets you synchronize your Blackberry's calendar with Google Calendar.

"Using your BlackBerry smartphone's native calendar, you can now access your Google calendar even when you don't have network coverage and be alerted for upcoming appointments with sound or vibration. Your Google Calendar stays synchronized whether you access it from your computer or your phone. You can add or edit entries right on your BlackBerry smartphone or on your Google Calendar on the web."...more

All iPhone Customers Will Switch to Pre this Summer

Oh dear. Palm investor Roger McNamee appears to have had a little too much Red Bull before his interview in San Francisco yesterday. McNamee is a co-founder of Elevation Partners, which put an extra $100 million into Palm last December.

"You know the beautiful thing: June 29, 2009, is the two- year anniversary of the first shipment of the iPhone. Not one of those people will still be using an iPhone a month later."

Them’s fightin’ words, and they remind us of some similar bravado from Palm CEO Ed Colligan back in 2006, before the iPhone wiped the floor with every single competitor: Colligan, on rumors of an iPhone...more

AT&T internal document says Palm Pre is inferior to the iPhone in every way

prevsiphone.jpg
Click for full-size image.

Precentral.net reports that AT&T has released an internal document
for its retail employees to use to help explain to customers dithering between the iPhone and the Pre why the Pre is barely less repulsive than week-old sushi.

Some of these are serious points -- the smaller screen on the Pre is a legitimate drawback -- but others are very subjective, e.g. -- "Touchscreen control gestures are not intuitive"

I called AT&T to ask whether this document is legitimate and accurate, and the representative I spoke with confirmed its authenticity and said it's common to distribute this kind of info to store employees about competing products so they can be ready to answer customers' questions.

And it's not like AT&T ninjas infiltrated Palm's R&D labs to get any of this data.

"This is all based on public information," said AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel.

Well, some of it certainly is, but that assertion about the UI not being intuitive is basically unfounded trash talking, and other criticisms are just banal (the Pre is only available in black!).

Of course, if Palm and Sprint could just get around to releasing the dang thing, we could decide for ourselves whether the Pre is intuitive or not.

Adobe's Flash comes to TVs, set-top boxes

From the PC to the TV, Adobe Systems wants to bring rich Web animation and video into consumers' living rooms.

The company will on Monday announce its latest version of its Flash multimedia platform that will essentially put its technology in Internet connected TVs, set-top boxes, Blu-ray players, and other digital home devices. The main purpose of the TV and consumer electronics optimized Flash is to allow viewers to see high-definition video, interactive applications and new user interfaces right on their TVs.

As part of the announcement, the company revealed a number of partners that plan to use the technology, including, Intel, Comcast, Disney Interactive, Netflix, Atlantic Records, and the New York Times Company.

Until now, Adobe's Flash Player has mainly been used on computers to make animation and video from Web sites like YouTube available in a Web browser. And the company has been very successful in this market. About 80 percent of online videos worldwide are viewed using Adobe Flash technology, according to comScore.

The company has also adapted its technology to create a mobile version of Flash that is used on smartphones. The mobile version lets people watch Flash-enabled video on the go. Now Adobe is turning its attention to the living room and big screen HD TVs. This means that people could have full access to the entire YouTube library of video on their TVs instead of a subset that has been specially encoded for TV viewing...more

T-Mobile Sidekick LX details leaked

T-Mobile, America’s sole purveyor of the Sidekick, begins taking pre-orders today for the new LX version of the well-liked, swivel-screen handset. Customers reserving a unit by the end of the month including through this T-Mobile address will receive theirs May 12 — one day before the device goes on sale to the general public.

Service-provider improvements to the latest version of the Sidekick include 3G support on T-Mobile’s HSDPA network and better data-migration options for those switching from another T-Mobile handset. Inside, there’s new GPS functionality; integrated Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter support via Skick-customized applications, including the ability to directly upload photos from the camera (now shooting at 3.2 megapixels) to MySpace and video to other social-networking sites; ShoutCast streaming-radio and YouTube video support; upcoming support for Microsot Exchange; and a 3.2″ F-WVGA screen with 854×480 resolution.

In addition to being the thinnest Sidekick, the Sidekick LX 2009 also boasts the largest and sharpest screen to date. Based on Sharp’s Aquos technology, the WVGA display measures 3.2 inches with an 854×480-pixel resolution and swivels open to reveal the full QWERTY keyboard. The screen was indeed sharp and bright, and we’ve always been a fan of the Sidekick’s keyboard. There’s good spacing between the buttons and the quality feels better on the Sidekick LX. Other highlights include a 3.5mm headphone jack, a microSD expansion slot (phone ships with a 1GB microSD card), and mood/notification LEDs along the top edge of the screen.

iPhone Firmware 3.0 Jailbroken

Firmware 3.0 was introduced to the world including countless features that users have been demanding since day one like copy & paste, spotlight, MMS (with video), landscape keyboard layout for emails and txts, 3G tethering, stereo bluetooth, turn by turn, and many more. Apple has listened and is finally providing everyone with the basic features that every other smartphone phone manufacturer has been offering the entire time with the first beta - and adding push in the second beta. With the excitement of 3.0, many early adopters started upgrading. Unfortunately for those not participating in the iPhone Developer Program many iPhones were left unable to be activated. In response, many participants of the program have been selling spots in their accounts to allow iPhone activation on firmware 3.0.

Firmware 3.0 wasn't out long before it started to be hacked. The Dev Team announced almost immediately that they had jailbroken 3.0. Tethering was enabled, allowing 3.0 users to tether via both cable and Bluetooth. Finally, a Russian hacker released a beta 3.0 jailbreak to the masses.

Latest iPhone developer agreement bans jailbreaks

The latest revision of the iPhone SDK agreement that developers must sign forbids jailbreaking or creating apps for jailbroken phones.

The "iPhone Developer Program License Agreement" governs what iPhone developers can and cannot do. Now, jailbreaking, assisting in jailbreaking, and developing and distributing jailbreak apps are among the things that the latest revision of that agreement does not condone.

Of course, Apple forbids the creation of apps that violate privacy, facilitate crimes, or violate intellectual property laws. But registered developers can no longer jailbreak their own phones or assist others in jailbreaking their phones, including (but not limited to) working on projects such as QuickPwn or PwnageTool. Developers are also forbidden from using the iPhone OS, SDK, or other developer tools to develop applications for distribution in any way other than the App Store or Ad Hoc distribution—which of course rules out distribution via Cydia, free or otherwise.

The relevant clauses in the agreement, a copy of which was made available to Ars, are as follows:

(e)You will not, through use of the Apple Software, services or otherwise, create any Application or other program that would disable, hack or otherwise interfere with the Security Solution, or any security, digital signing, digital rights management, verification or authentication mechanisms implemented in or by the iPhone operating system software, iPod touch operating system software, this Apple Software, any services or other Apple software or technology, or enable others to do so; and

(f) Applications developed using the Apple Software may only be distributed if selected by Apple (in its sole discretion) for distribution via the App Store or for limited distribution on Registered Devices (ad hoc distribution) as contemplated in this Agreement.

Though jailbreaking allows access to apps that Apple doesn't approve of and enables unlocking the phone from approved carriers, it also allows users and developers access to the UNIX underpinnings of iPhone OS, which both groups could have perfectly legitimate reasons for wanting. These provisions aren't likely to stop the iPhone Dev Team from working on a jailbreak for iPhone OS 3.0, but there are certainly developers who will think twice about helping in those efforts or distributing a rejected app for jailbroken phones, lest they lose access to the iPhone developer program altogether.

Jailbreaking will continue as long as it offers even a small subset of users something they want but Apple won't allow. Still, preventing developers from being involved in jailbreaking in any way can actually be a hinderance to developers looking to squeeze the best performance possible out of their apps, or those looking to experiment outside of Apple's walled garden.

Tour of HTC Snap with Inner Circle

A quick video tour of the new Snap from HTC, plus HTC's "Inner Circle" email filter feature.

YouTube blocks music videos in Germany too

YouTube has pulled the plug on music videos in Germany as Western Europe starts to look like a hostile environment for Web music services. A YouTube spokesman confirmed that YouTube is no longer playing music videos belonging to the largest music labels after talks with Germany’s biggest royalty collections group, GEMA, broke down. The conflict is almost identical to YouTube’s spat with a royalty group in the United Kingdom, but with one important twist. According to YouTube, GEMA is asking for royalty rates that are 50 times higher than those asked for by PRS, the British organization, and YouTube argues those are even too high. According to sources close to the negotiations, GEMA is asking for rates far higher than what the group asked for in the original agreement.

A GEMA representative could not be reached for comment. But it should be noted that the music industry has often offered favorable financial terms to start-up Web services in initial licensing agreements. Music executives have told me in recent months that once the companies begin to generate revenue and gain a foothold, they should expect to pay more. Talks are ongoing but until a deal is worked out, it’s unlikely German YouTube fans will be seeing any music clips. At least in Great Britain, YouTube can make the claim to record labels that the site promotes music sales. The BBC recently reported on a survey that asked more than 1,500 Brits about viewing habits. About half of the adults who participated said they purchased music after watching a YouTube video by an artist.
